Recently, Ta-Nehisi Coates said, โWell, theyโre killing people in the streets. I donโt like to say I told you so, but I saw this coming years ago, and they said I was being too alarmist. But itโs consistent with what the United States is as a country.โ

Republicans are great because one day one of their Congressmen will say Muslims don't belong here and then the next day one of their Senators will say they're willing to sacrifice American lives in order to protect Saudi Arabia.
Simon is a black and white cat. He is curled up sleeping inside a cat tree that looks like a red post box.
Simon in the post box for #tuxietuesday.
Have a great day.

"Readers outside Iran can play an important role by amplifying and translating independent voices, organising solidarity events, helping make social struggles in Iran more visible. The more these voices are heard, the harder it will be to silence them."

Ok Claude, so we're looking at like what, a year? ๐คฏ
"Parts of some World War II naval minefields still exist because they are too extensive and expensive to clear. Some 1940s-era mines may remain dangerous for many years."
(same Wikipedia article from above)
Siri how long does naval mine removal take? ๐
"The cost of producing and laying a mine is usually between 0.5% and 10% of the cost of removing it, and it can take up to 200 times as long to clear a minefield as to lay it."
lol, lmao, brb investing in alternative energy companies
This is *not* true. Brent rose 12% off the 1:20p lows, roughly $10/bbl. When market are moving as fast as they are in this kind of info environment *please* specify event effects better than "the standard % change vs prior close widget".
Summing up Iran news today, I think.
- US/Israel strikes continue
- Iran doesn't want talks, still firing on neighbors
- US asked Israel to stop hitting Iranian energy infra
- US claimed to be escorting tankers
- oops no it isn't
- Mines in the water
- ~80-90% of Iran mine laying capacity intact
Surplus is not inherently good but it certainly makes solving the competitive problems of scarcity a lot easier.
And while yes, we could always treat those children better, the structural incentives are to treat them as poorly as possible, whereas if there is a viable alternative, suddenly "people can afford tomatoes" and "these children can go to school" are not in any tension.
I would like my leisure time and the food I eat at a price I can afford to come at the expense of unfeeling machines rather than 11-year old undocumented Guatemalan refugees press-ganged by poverty and legal status into picking tomatoes, actually.
I actually like my job of making very special Poasts for legal disputes and my life of living in an urban apartment building with my family, near cute little shops and restaurants, where food comes from a store and not a plot out back.
Like you are perfectly welcome to go start a collective farm and do this. Some people do! And it's a small group because unless you're really into that specific lifestyle it kind of sucks shit.
I think the revealed preference of essentially all of humanity is that they'd rather watch television than labor 12 hours a day on a collective farm.
The future is almost everyone doing care work while production is largely automated.
Automation does not *necessarily* translate into more freedom for workers, but it certainly can do that! The productivity enhancements wrought by industrialization produced a surplus that was later partially reallocated to the masses through regulation and transfer spending.
I definitely have more leisure time than subsistence farmers did, yeah.
