It really is the easiest thing in the world to say an entire population shouldn’t be driven from their homes, blocked from escape, then bombed and starved into oblivion. This should never happen: no exceptions, no context required. The fact that people are still on the fence is what’s controversial.

Today, I’m thinking about all the mothers who have been separated from their children. By militaries, by borders, by death. Every child should have the option to hold their mom on Mother’s Day.

This is the right approach — speak to them as you would an especially stupid child, spell out their crimes and your contempt clearly.

i will say again that given the trajectory of the white house so far, strident opposition a la 2017 would have absolutely been the most prudent and effective decision and the absence of that opposition in the first two months made things demonstrably worse.
