Two teams from Lyon & two teams from Marseille working together to improve the outcome of childhood cancer patients: it doesnβt get more SouthROCK than this!

NEW EQUIPMENT JUST DROPPED!
Thanks to @southrock.bsky.social, we will upgrade the HiTS drug screening platform of @crcm.bsky.social with several devices.
Today, we installed a ViaFlo (INTEGRA), which will offer flexibility for our drug screening on 3D models, especially patient-derived tumoroids.

Yesterday, we held one of our regular steering committee meetings with all the clinicians and researchers in charge of our scientific program.
The occasion to reflect on our first year of existence and prioritize our actions for year 2.
Watch this space in 2025!
The Marseille research community stood up for Science today.
Members of SouthROCK joined in to protest against the ongoing dismantlement of academic research and harassment of scientists in the US and around the world.
I hope there will be hundreds of marches around the world to stand up for science tomorrow.
Letβs show these monsters, we wonβt let them destroy Science.
Killing research is killing hope.
Today, all 3 centers of excellence in pediatric oncology research were invited by INCa to present what they have been up to during their first year of existence.
We were delighted to showcase everything we have put in place, including our beloved #RockBands, ongoing and upcoming projects.
Co-led by renowned leaders in onco- and immuno-metabolism, Drs Sophie Vasseur from @crcm.bsky.social, Erica Cosset from CRCL & @rafajarguello.bsky.social (pict) from @ciml.bsky.social, βMetabo-a-gogoβ will study the origin & therapeutic targeting of inter- & intra-tumor metabolic heterogeneity.

Last but not least, the 9th #RockBand is everything cancer metabolism.
From defining metabolic vulnerabilities in pediatric cancers, the impact of metabolic inhibitors on developmental pathways and the slightly reverse impact of developmental alterations on cell metabolism.

It will also evaluate pediatric cancer perception among patients, families, professionals and the general public.
Finally, it will interrogate the notion of primary prevention in pediatric oncology.
It is co-led by renowned epidemiologist Eva Steliarova-Foucher (right) and Sylvain Besle (left).
« In their eyes »
Our second Humanities & Social Sciences #RockBand will focus on cancer perception, as well as action and reaction in the face of #ChildhoodCancer.
It will notably question public engagement of cancer researchers and clinicians

Portrait of Dr Sandrine de Montgolfier
Group picture of Dr Paul Saultier, Dr Carine Halfon-Domenech, Dr Sarah Benezech and Dr Amandine Bertrand (from left to right)
Co-directed by Dr Sandrine de Montgolfier from Marseille (first pict) & Dr Amandine Bertrand from Lyon (right of 2nd pict), this band is all about co-construction of age-adapted materials to improve informed consent procedures & communication around pediatric cancers as a whole.

Introducing our first Humanities & Social Sciences #RockBand, the Talking Minds.
This band aims at improving the means of communication between patients & their families on one hand, and clinicians & scientists on the other.
1/2
This one is for the open-minded!
It will bring together experts in 3 major fields of medical research: #Hematology, #Oncology & #Immunology to make the most of the skill sets, tools & models available in our Center.
It is led by @marionlegrand.bsky.social, Sarah Benezech & Carine Halfon-Domenech.
How do you break the century-old frontier between medical #Hematology and #Oncology?
In our Centre of Excellence we will try to break barriers and build true transdisciplinary projects to improve the care and prevention in pediatric oncology. For that, we created the #RockBand « Crossroads ».
1/2
The portfolio of this band is wide because there are a large number of factors (and subsequent windows of susceptibility) involved in #ChildhoodCancer.
Therefore, we have 4 leaders for this band: Veronique Maguer-Satta (center), Rita Khouery (right), Paul Saultier & ValΓ©rie Castellani
Time to introduce our 5th #RockBand.
An hommage to the legendary Doors, this 20-piece band will focus on critical Windows of susceptibility during pregnancy and early childhood, pre-disposition factors, the notion of clusters, the prediction of long-term sequelae & prevention

π¨ We are hiring! We are looking for motivated bioinformatician to join our team βGenomics and Development of Childhood Cancers" at Institut Curie, Paris, France.
The interested candidates should apply by sending an email with their CV and motivation letter
Portrait of Servanne Tauszig Delamasure and Cedric Maurange standing next to each other, smiling, with pine trees and the sea in the background
The members of the Comets will focus on the oncogenic & developmental trajectories and the impact of treatments and (micro-)environmental factors on these trajectories.
Whether they are genetic or epigenetic trajectories, induced by intrinsic or extrinsic factors⦠they will leave no stone unturned!
Another day, another RockBand π€π»
Now that @cedricmaurange.bsky.social is here we can introduce the Comets, the band he co-directs with Laura Broutier.
This band is for the lovers of cell fate and trajectories.

It gathers >30 people who investigate the genome/transcriptome/epigenome/epitranscriptome/proteome of pediatric tumors & define the tumor autonomous & non-autonomous mechanisms by studying the interplay between tumor & stroma.
Thanks to RATM we will dig deeper into the biology of pediatric cancers!
The name βRage against the Mesenchymaβ written on an orange background using the font of the band Rage Against the Machine
To celebrate the arrival of @delloye-bourgeois.bsky.social on BlueSky, letβs introduce our 3rd RockBand that she co-directs with Virginie Marcel:
Rage against the Mesenchyma is obviously an hommage to the legendary metal band that was really upset with their printer.

Introducing our second #RockBand: the BEATLS, as in Brainstorming for the Elaboration of Ancillary and Translational Studies.
As its acronym indicates this band is in charge of everything translational in our Center: turning fundamental discoveries into novel therapeutic opportunities.
Introducing our first #RockBand
Entirely dedicated to studying the impact of adapted physical activity (APA) throughout life, the #RunningStones is made of pediatric oncologists and muscle biologists.
Together they will define how APA can improve muscle health and treatment tolerance.
Our center of excellence in pediatric oncology research gathers close to 250 clinicians, scientists and students working together to improve the care and prevention of #ChildhoodCancers.
To structure ourselves, we have opted for the creation of 9 #RockBands with specific missions.

SouthROCK is all about collaborations.
Collaborations between Lyon and Marseille, between clinicians and biologists, between disciplinesβ¦
This is why we mostly had presentations from duos of scientists (and even trios and quatuors!) over the past two days.
It was lots of fun and inspiring
Start of Day 2 of our annual seminar.
Xavier Morelli and Carine Halfon-Domenech kick off the βEmerging projectsβ session with their collaboration on the evaluation of DCK inhibitors in pediatric acute lymphoblastic #leukemia.
One of the 5 projects funded in our first round of research grants
First up, @marionlegrand.bsky.social and @rafajarguello.bsky.social present their collaborative project studying the metabolic heterogeneity of #Neuroblastoma, recently funded by the national cancer institute (INCa)
For the next 2 days, the clinicians and scientists of #SouthROCK are all gathered in Marseille at the βPalais du Pharoβ for our first annual seminar.
We will discuss ongoing and upcoming collaborative projects that form the basis of our center of Excellence.
Transdisciplinarity is key
This is it! We are officially and effectively launched !!! All the key pediatric oncologists, researchers and patient families gathered in Lyon for the official kick-off meeting of SouthROCK.
So many great research projects will emerge in the coming months. We canβt wait to get cracking !!
