I often remind myself to look around and see where I am, as I come up on a milestone birthday I am doing it more often, a self inventory maybe, and I am pretty damn happy with most of what I’ve created in my life.
On this particular day I was kind of in a hurry and started getting anxious about time.
Then I slapped myself and laughed out loud.
Dumbass. You manifested this, that little 10 year old kid wished for this and you made it happen and here you are. You did this to yourself, smile and take it all in.
Fast forward to today. I’ve been in Chicago, Boystown, for coming on ten years. A few summers ago I was walking to Jewels, 1/4 mile away, it was warm and sunny, a beautiful Chicago summer day, and I stopped maybe 6x to talk to friends and acquaintances I know, a hug, quick kiss and chat.
One day I watched and said to myself “I want to live in a neighborhood like this one day”, where I walk around and see people and friends and have a community. Not the garage farms of suburbia I was raised in.
I distinctly remember sitting in the windows at Harvey’s Heart of the Castro having lunch and watching all the guys in the neighborhood walking to their destinations, stopping and seeing a friend, hugging, a quick kiss, a short chat and moving on. Lots of community, friendship and love.
Many times Mom took me to the Castro because she had so many gay friends and felt so safe and accepted and at home among the community of gays. This was 1974-1980.
The Castro was at its peak pre aids.
When I was a kid from ages about 8-14 I lived in San Jose, Cambrian, Almaden areas, and Mom would take me to the city (San Francisco) on the train once a month or so. We’d do the tourist stuff, museums, shops, neighborhoods and restaurants on Sundays. Always back on the train by 6/7.

There’s a beautiful boy at Jewels who always has his hair in tight curls, usually with a flower or butterfly pin accessory in his hair, wears sparkly makeup around his eyes and such.
Everytime I’m in his line I engage and compliment him because he’s just so creative and beautiful.
