Agreed. I'm referring to panic about students using technology for homework assignments (which often shouldn't exist) and the like, not the discussion about how AI should be regulated in regards to copyright infringement and the like.
I'd suggest calculators and Google Translate also fall into the understanding category. I do get the concern, but I find we're having a deeply conservative, counterproductive response to a scenario that requires adaptation over handwringing.
The hyperbolic panic over ChatGPT in education is just a redux of the Google, Wikipedia and calculator panics of the past. The way we educate students changes as technology evolves. The problem isn't emerging technology, but archaic learning assessment tools that new technologies render useless.
