"Decades later, the humanities remain a threat to power...In times of social and political strife, we often proclaim, 'History will not look upon this moment kindly.' But how will history remember us if the historians are executed?...Who will control our memories?"
Meaty stuff in a great film!

Who Will Remember You?: “The Secret Agent” and the Humanities as Resistance
How Kleber Mendonça Filho's film positions archival, art, and preservation as tools of resistance.
For my @ebertvoices.bsky.social debut, I wrote about THE SECRET AGENT, the humanities, and memory as both acts of resistance and love. This movie is very dear to me, and I'm glad to be an enthusiastic champion of it as part of Women's Writers Week!

THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

“The arts and humanities are an essential vanguard of resistance because they threaten the total and complete control authoritarianism demands, and that is why they become targets of attack through funding, censorship, and eradication.”

"In the world of the movie and throughout all of Mendonça Filho’s filmography, remembrance is an act of resistance as much as it is an act of love,” writes @daniellamazzio.bsky.social about THE SECRET AGENT.

Self-promotion aside, these footnotes are to underscore how *moved* I am by Mendonça's work. THE SECRET AGENT is personal film to me because of its marriage of the personal and political, its belief in love as a foundation of resistance, and its devotion to memory.

Zoe Saldaña’s ‘Emilia Pérez’ Defense at the Oscars Raises Key Questions About Mexican Cinema: Hear from Those Fighting to Save It
Hear from programmers, curators, and filmmakers fighting for Mexican cinema's past and future.
And... my piece last year on Mexican cinema was a celebration of those who work very hard to preserve parts of history that have otherwise been abandoned. (Side note: Viviana García Besné's PERDIDA is a great companion piece to PICTURES OF GHOSTS)

Lowering the curtain - Chicago Reader
Trump’s brutal cuts to arts funding demonstrate the vulnerability of a culture sector tied to state ideology. How will Chicago rebuild?
And just before seeing THE SECRET AGENT, I had written a massive piece about the Trump Administration's attacks against the arts and humanities, reckoning with the very real impact these fields have on our lives.

Palacios para la gente - Chicago Reader
Most of Chicago’s dedicated Spanish-language movie theaters have disappeared, but the histories and cultures that they encompassed are worth remembering.
The same year Kleber Mendonça Filho‘s PICTURES OF GHOSTS debuted, I spent months working on a piece about Chicago's forgotten Spanish-language movie theaters (and my personal relationship to them). Suffice to say, his essay film is very important to me.

I don't think any candidate is *more* progressive than her, but regardless, neither Mendoza or Showalter are the ones who have received substantial progressive support, and I am not buying into the candidate that's been backed. Of course, none of this matters because this race is a mess altogether.

Kina's campaign is practically nonexistent and a mess, so I by no means am suggesting she's a viable candidate, and the two candidates you mentioned have great progressive platforms. Collins always impresses me with her thorough handle on policy, as evident in the Access Living q&a.

Great question! Though many discussions (and speakers) will be based in Chicago movements, the issues discussed are greater than the region. The schedule hasn't been published yet, but all but a couple of sessions I'd say are either case studies or dialogues about issues all across food and urban ag

Chicago sports team owners pitch public subsidies for new stadiums
For decades, team owners have used their power and resources to reshape Chicago suit their desires. Will we ever learn?
with talk of public funding for a new bears stadium yet again ramping up in springfield, perhaps it’s a good time to revisit this piece from @joeengleman.bsky.social that explores who actually benefits from publicly funded stadium projects (hint: it’s not us!).

Please check out Sean Dinces's book, Bulls Market.
The subjects it covers including Walter Burnett's legislative rise, the erosion of public space, & Cook County property tax policy all continue to be relevant particularly as the sea of parking lots around the UC gets redeveloped.

One of the great pleasures of last year was getting into Wiseman via Joe getting into Wiseman as he wrote this piece; engaging with one of our greatest documentarians and simultaneously seeing his work through the eyes of someone I love who cares deeply about the preservation of public life.

It's not one of the entries that gets talked about as much, but NEAR DEATH is one of the most profound viewing experiences I've ever had. I think it's a film everyone should see before they talk about Healthcare.
