I suggest reaching out to NIHMS for guidance in each specific case. We did that for our recently published paper and are waiting for their response. The idea is that they are the source of the rule and so they would be able to provide the best guidance.

As someone who ended up using non-model systems after doing his PhD with Drosophila, you don't realise just how amazing FlyBase or WormBase are until you try to genetics without them.
