Anyone out there on #episky working with natural language processing to get data from electronic health records? It’s a steep learning curve but I think it will be worth it in complex immune mediated diseases like lupus and sarcoidosis. Just submitted my first grant on this topic🀞

What is the point of a letter of intent? Mine (2 pgs) was rejected & the reviewer said that the details of the plan were not clear....

How many details for a project are expected in a 2 page LOI?!? Or is this just an excuse for the reviewer to tank a project that they didn't like?

I make all of my pubilcations open access. Why do people still ask for them on ResearchGate? Is it laziness or do they not understand they can get the papers themselves?

I'd like to learn how to better leverage students’ diverse backgrounds - their unique knowledge, experiences and perspectives. I also hope to integrate more global issues and perspectives.

I have just started a course called Two2Tango - teaching in the Glocal (global and local) classroom. I am really looking forward to exchanging views with other teachers from around the globe on teaching in the international classroom. Looking forward to learning more and improving my practice.

The other portraits of women at the time were sitting in dresses in gardens or doing their hair or posing for the artist or doing something passive in a refined setting, a decoration.

Soldan was depicted as a manual laborer and artist, dedicating herself to her work without caring about her looks. Radical for the time period (glad I didn’t live then!!). A groundbreaking depiction of female professionalism.

Gladly! The painting is β€œPortrait of Venny Soldan-Brofeldt”, the artist’s friend (who was also a painter and sculptor) whom she shared a studio with in Paris. Apparently it was unconventional to portray a bourgeois woman in a relaxed way with casual dress and behavior.

I enjoyed the Hanna Hirsch Pauli exhibit at the Swedish National Museum today. A little inspiration and beauty to brighten up the day. This painting was considered controversial at the time (1886) because of how the subject was depicted and what that implied about women’s roles and behavior.

Good morning epi methods community! Please consider applying for (and spreading the word about) this position here at Minnesota. It's a great place to be! (You can read the whole description and apply here: apply.interfolio.com/179313) #EpiSky

It got rejected from one journal, but I usually aim high. The 2nd journal sent comments from 3 reviewers which we responded to. Then it was sent to us for a 2nd round, the 3 reviewers were satisfied but they added a 4th reviewer (?!) who didn't add much. Just extra work (& time) for everyone!

A good thing in a grant: a figure which summarizes the project.
For a paper, use regular and simple language. some people use more complicated words and formulations because they think it sounds smarter.

16.12.2025 08:24 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

When someone tries to cram as many words on the page as possible, it’s frustrating to read. It’s nice when there are a few bolded sentences in a grant to catch the eye when flipping through but when people bold every other sentence or partial phrase it goes too far.

Manuscript and grant reviewers in biomedical sciences: Do you have any major pet peeves when it comes to formatting of papers or grants that you're reviewing? Anything else not format-related? I'm putting together some recommendations for trainees in our #epidemiology program. Thanks!

Show me the money! Just kidding, I'm usually flattered and I spend a bit of time responding to the email in great detail. This is probably why I have a million side projects and am behind on my own...

I have learned a new term today: Productive Procrastination

Avoiding the thing you most don't want to do by doing something else you've also been avoiding.

Example: avoiding grading student exams by picking up long-dormant projects to complete.
