A basic statement of fact no one in the government of Canada is principled or brave enough to make.
A basic statement of fact no one in the government of Canada is principled or brave enough to make.
I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.
Carney dragging Canada into a war it doesnβt want on the side of the US which Canadians view as a bigger threat to world peace than Russia and China COMBINED would be a death sentence for his government. The fact heβs even considering it is appalling.
For the followers of Jesus, wars are never holy.
Amazing that this essay never even mentions public transportation @thewaroncars.bsky.social
Seeing that no press freedom orgs have rushed to defend and help @rachelgilmore.bsky.social makes me ask, for the millionth time, what do CJFE, PEN, etc even do? Why exist at all when you do fuck all to fight censorship and intimidation?
I will also say that itβs a bit wild to me that no press freedom organization or professional journalistic association has tried to contact me or even put out a statement here.
I mean Jesus Christ. A little solidarity from institutions would be nice here!
Reminder that the US military budget is larger than the military spending of the next nine largest countries combined.
Over half goes to private defense contractors.
This is the military-industrial complex Eisenhower warned of β on steroids.
Record profits are unpaid wages.
In a just society, one 40-hour a week job should pay enough to support a nuclear family β one brief stint as CEO should not pay so much it creates generation wealth and empowers the 1% to buy our elections.

Is it really so hard for Mark Carney to say something like this instead of constantly defending US breaches of international law?
The argument that Carney cant demand that international law be upheld, not just in the Middle East but everywhere, makes no sense to me. Canada can do this & say both that the Iranian regime should fall & that aggressive war is illegal. Itβs in our direct interests to do so.
Cuba is a Socialist country and one of the poorest in the world suffering under a 60+ year economic blockade by the richest country in the world.
Guess which one has better healthcare, life expectancy, literacy, lower infant mortality and every type of crime.
It ain't the USA.
Todayβs the day: Contact your MP and tell them to vote for @jennykwan.bsky.social's No More Loopholes Act to stop the flow of Canadian arms to Israel via the US.

Boycotts work.
It's why we're told they don't work and that people with a platform "shouldn't be political" yet if enough people are the world can change
The only photographs of the 200 resistance fighters executed by the Nazis on Mayday 1944 in Athens are now being auctioned for a handful of dollars on eBay, a platform founded by crypto-fascist techbros. To honour the fallen it is our duty to stop this racket.
βChildren always bear the worst ravages of societyβs ills. It is not surprising at all, to see that Canadaβs first mass shooting against children would happen at a time of crumbling social conditions and increasing desperation.β
There is genuinely so much bad, mis-and disinformation floating around about the tragedy in BC right now online that social media is worse than useless - it is actively harmful.
I think the peopleβs forum is sending supplies and Iβve also seen this link going around
But honestly I think the above thing is the most important.

We desperately need this in Canada too.
βThe fact that we do live next to the largest private health care insurance market in the world, the largest private, for-profit health care provider market in the world, is reason to take these issues very seriously,β @alonghurst.bsky.social said. #cdnpoli

Can you imagine being the most famous Black person in the world at one point, only to die in near obscurity?
The American government made sure no one would remember one of the greatest Americans to ever live.

New Oxfam report finds that billionaire wealth increased 3x faster last year than in previous years. A clear reminder that right-wing populism is fake populism.

Fascinating how Rupar left out the beginning, what I would I would say was the most important part: "We knew the international rules based order was false."
Carney straight up admits to Western hypocrisy without any semblance of apology for it. Just, "well sucks it doesn't work anymore for us."
No we do not, our country is anti-nuclear weapons (officially anyway) www.nti.org/countries/ca...
