Graphic showing the common descent of chivalry and cavalry from Latin caballus (βpack horseβ). Chivalry enter English via French chevalier; cavalry from Italian cavalier.
Made this infographic to teach my students that chivalry and cavalry are doublets (and cognates). π€―π€―π€―

Got Ebola? No? Thank USAID! (Hey, preventing transmissible diseases from spreading and mutating abroad prevents drug resistant super bugs from spreading here! How bout that!)
Hey, so this is my sister. She has worked for USAID for almost 15 years, living in Senegal, Rwanda, and the Kyrgyz Republic. Her work has focused on improving nutrition and preventing the spread of diseases like TB and Ebola. PLEASE HELP www.usaidstopwork.com/individuals

My amazing students built domΕ«s Romanae out of graham crackers today! They all did an amazing job!!!
Congrats!!!! Thatβs amazing!!
Oh damn I forgot ALL about this but I loved it too!! Wild how that one screenshot brought everything back from the Memory Dump.
It's just hilariously disingenuous. Imagine looking at, say, ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY and concluding that the biggest threat to liberty isn't abuse of power, but powerful people refraining from sufficiently wielding their authority out of fear that they might one day be held accountable.

Seeking opinions. Is this song an inappropriate way to teach "febrem habet" to 9th graders at a Catholic school? Asking for a friend.

Students are doing a unit on the Roman invasion of Britain. I took a poll yesterday: if you were a Briton, would you have resisted Roman conquest or cooperated? The results are in:
17: accept
1: secret resistance
1: it depends

Sharon taught me the phrase βvague pronoun referentβ in my first year of grad school and then proceeded to write VPR all over my thesis, dissertation, and early article drafts until I finally broke the habit. A huge debt indeed! β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ

Sestertius of Nero on the left. An Oreo abominable snowman on the right.
On the other hand...this is mine. :(
Collage of Roman coins re-created in Oreo! Augustus' Sidus Iulium coin, Nero's Porta Ostia sestertius, a coin with the deification of Sabina, and Augustus' Aegypto Capta crocodile coin...all recreated in Oreo. Optime factum!!!
For an end-of-year project, my students researched Roman coins and recreated them in Oreo. They did an amazing job!!!
Files with gorgeous and actually legible labels!
I got a label-maker as an early Christmas present and I have NEVER in all my days been so excited about filing!!!!!
We were on the same flight! I always book out of Midway and itβs always a good decision.
Such a good point that these tasks often require serious research labor. Esp when I was the workhorse teaching faculty in a small dept, I was often expected to develop, prep, and teach courses that were far from my area of expertise. (Greek oratory when my expertise is Latin poetry e.g.)
Did you spot this in the wild?! In Oxford??
Itβs Indicium / Clue geared to Cap 5! Lucilius in thermis interfectus est!

Sometimes I start what seems like a totally normal and reasonable weekend project so we can do something fun in class next week and 72 hours later Iβm glueing popsicle sticks at 1 in the morning like βhow did we get here?β
