a Callawayia has just surfaced to take a breath, it quickly darts back underwater as to not be ambushed from below Callawayia is an ichthyosaur from Canada with a proportionally longer tail than other icthyosaurs, ichthyosaurs were a group of very successful fully marine reptiles that appeared similar to cetaceans however they swam side to side rather than up and down

during sunrise, a spooked Doryaspis kicks up sand with its tail and cornual plates. it shoots jets of water out of its branchial openings from the force of sucking in water to breathe as it makes its escape Doryaspis is a kind of jawless fish that inhabited the Devonian of Norway, it is well known for its heavily armoured body, long cornual plates that look like wide pectoral fins, and long pseudorostrum. while the use of its pseudorostrum are heavily debated, biomechanical studies of the fish show that it wouldve swam the most efficiently close to the bottom of the water.

I never want to be told a villain any story I write is not subtle and nuanced enough ever again

I feel dirty making this accusation because the above issues might be honest and human mistakes, and apologies to the authors/artists if I'm in error. But the rendering is so well executed that the anatomical fluffs - as simple as getting two eyes the same size in a front-on view - are suspicious.

Also, it has some classic AI image hallmarks like plastic-looking textures, warping of anatomy, and lighting that doesn't suit the scene. The image is credited to Xiangtong Lei & Sihang Zhang, who are authors on the paper, but I can't find any other examples of their art.

The recent PR #paleoart for Lei et al. on four-eyed Cambrian fishes: is this AI? Asymmetrical eyes that aren't fish-like and have eyeshine (can't happen underwater); eye and gill anatomy doesn't match fossils; absence of anterior ventral fin; dorsal fin wraps onto the lateral face of the tail...

The Hatzegopteryx from The Dinosaurs (2026). It is a short-necked azhdarchid with a robust beak, wrinkly skin on the head, and a gray-black color pattern. It is surrounded by fog and horsetails

The Arambourgiania from The Dinosaurs (2026). It is a long-necked, lanky azhdarchid, with an orange-brown neck and body and dark gray limbs and head. It stands in the middle of a nesting colony of the hadrosaur Edmontosaurus, who are on both sides of it and not happy that it's there.

The new Netflix series The Dinosaurs features two azhdarchids, Arambourgiania and Hatzegopteryx. Both are portrayed in their capacity as eaters of small dinosaurs and general menaces. And they look gorgeous
