two Tusciziphius are illuminated by an artificial light during the night, one has albinism while the other is a more normal looking colouration

Tusciziphius is an extinct species of basal beaked whale that inhabited various parts of Europe and North America throughout the Miocene and Pliocene. both species are only known from skulls, but the skulls provide a unique morphology in the presence of a raised "keel" on their fused premaxillary bones. this may have been an attachment point for a large melon or used for something else, we still arent sure

a Cyrtograptus floats suspended amongst other plankton. the small colonial organism floats along the current, each of the small zooid's tentacles catching bits of ditritus and other plankton that happen to float by

Cyrtograptus is a kind of planktonic marine invertebrate that may seem closer related to cnidarians like siphonophores, but is actually closer related to us and echinoderms as it's a hemichordate. this genus is characterised by its spiral coiling with primary and secondary branches of zooids growing from the outer edge of the whorl

a Callawayia has just surfaced to take a breath, it quickly darts back underwater as to not be ambushed from below

Callawayia is an ichthyosaur from Canada with a proportionally longer tail than other icthyosaurs, ichthyosaurs were a group of very successful fully marine reptiles that appeared similar to cetaceans however they swam side to side rather than up and down

during sunrise, a spooked Doryaspis kicks up sand with its tail and cornual plates. it shoots jets of water out of its branchial openings from the force of sucking in water to breathe as it makes its escape

Doryaspis is a kind of jawless fish that inhabited the Devonian of Norway, it is well known for its heavily armoured body, long cornual plates that look like wide pectoral fins, and long pseudorostrum. while the use of its pseudorostrum are heavily debated, biomechanical studies of the fish show that it wouldve swam the most efficiently close to the bottom of the water.

I feel dirty making this accusation because the above issues might be honest and human mistakes, and apologies to the authors/artists if I'm in error. But the rendering is so well executed that the anatomical fluffs - as simple as getting two eyes the same size in a front-on view - are suspicious.

Also, it has some classic AI image hallmarks like plastic-looking textures, warping of anatomy, and lighting that doesn't suit the scene. The image is credited to Xiangtong Lei & Sihang Zhang, who are authors on the paper, but I can't find any other examples of their art.

The recent PR #paleoart for Lei et al. on four-eyed Cambrian fishes: is this AI? Asymmetrical eyes that aren't fish-like and have eyeshine (can't happen underwater); eye and gill anatomy doesn't match fossils; absence of anterior ventral fin; dorsal fin wraps onto the lateral face of the tail...

14.03.2026 02:49 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

why is it so hard for people to accept you are still part of the group you evolved from anyway

and like, it's not like common names will stop being used anyway, we still call non-tetrapod vertebrates fish for one even if fish as a whole clade themselves don't make sense the way we thought

"Rays are actually another lineage of flattened sharks, like carpet sharks" would save us plenty of headaches. Rays are sharks, birds are dinosaurs, snakes are lizards, insects are crustaceans, humans are apes which in turn are monkeys.

The new Netflix series The Dinosaurs features two azhdarchids, Arambourgiania and Hatzegopteryx. Both are portrayed in their capacity as eaters of small dinosaurs and general menaces. And they look gorgeous

Do you think the african lambeosaurs could've still formed a clade? Or is this a case where we have too little info and it could just as easily be many hadrosaurs crossing over (I mean, from what it looks like it happened with hadrosauromorphs in South America at least twice based on Gonkoken)

The US made itself so indispensable to the global order that other countries are just holding their breaths, hoping this go back to β€œnormal” because they’re afraid of what happens to their own power if they admit the emperor has no clothes.

The US cannot be trusted on any level!

So true. Mel Baggs wrote about this kind of β€˜glamour’-while-dehumanizing: β€œThe worst institutions have lots and lots and lots of staff. They have beautiful grounds that people are more or less free to walk around on. There are no locks on the doors.”

I'm late to sharing my new article, published last Saturday.

Since publication, they've started arresting Queenslanders.

They don't want BIPOC scholars doing history, because those scholars won't tie themselves in knots to make excuses for the text until it can somehow be forced to mean the exact opposite of what it says, clear as day.

Trump, et al, don't want your kids to learn history because the primary sources are completely damning and they know it.
