Someone told me that voting is "potential harm mitigation," and I think that's right.

(As an aside, this is why I just couldn't get into my college ethics courses. When you're a misanthropist, it all seems like angels dancing on a pin's head.)

Also, considering how we treat human beings who we agree have human consciousness, I'm not sure if it is even worth figuring out if machines are conscious. We'll exploit them either way.

Funny thing is that most Indian philosophical schools consider dreamless sleep to be a form of consciousness, so there's not even agreement on that.

Hot take: I'm not sure if "consciousness" is useful as a broad category. I think the most we can talk about at this point is "human consciousness."
