An illustrated person stands with their hands on their hips, gazing at a child in front of them. The child has curly hair. The person's shadow shows an outline of a child. A landscape with water and grass is in the background. The headline reads, "How a research trip helped me overcome separation anxiety as a new mother," with a "Working Life" label above.
βThe hardest part of becoming a postdoc turned out to be learning how to leave my daughter behind,β this researcher writes.

Success in science demands a unique mix of skills β from physical precision (pipetting, dissection, sterile technique) to strong habits like detailed note-taking, organization, and clear communication.

Congratulations to the postdocs Carmen and Nicole from Pillai's lab for the last publication!ππ€©
They describe the cryoEM of MIWI-pachytene piRNA complex in mouse testes and discover an important pocket that enhance the endonuclease activityβοΈ
I love Fig 2:
projects rarely go A β B.
They go A β ??? β nothing works β mild despair β the cloud β Finally C
So getting lost is part of the job, don't feel bad. The answer is not always pushing harder, sometimes is better changing the direction to find Cπ

However, sometimes fundamental science can be also useful : www.nature.com/articles/d41...
#postdoclife #science
I could also give the opposite answer: in countless ways.
Like an orchestra, science can awaken infinite sensations, emotions, even passions. Scientific work is a cultural good.
It doesnβt pursue aesthetic beauty β it pursues understanding.
Its purpose is to know more about humanity and about nature
βHow has scientific knowledge in your discipline changed the possibilities of human action?βπ€
My immediate answer: it hasnβt.
And that doesnβt trouble me β any more than a symphony orchestraβs lack of βproductivityβ should trouble us.
It may not produce economic goods, but itβs vital to our society
This Friday, the @swissrn.bsky.social is organizing a ReproducibiliTea Geneva Journal Club in UniMail!
