This is Governor Hochulβand thus the state of NYS politicsβwhen she faces no primary challenge from the Left and when a majority of Assembly Dems are neoliberals.
Friends, we *must* win our Assembly primaries this year.
1. Its been a week since NYU Langone ended its trans youth care program.
Then Sinai followed a few days ago.
There are immediate steps Mamdani can take, and he refuses to do so. When asked about those steps, his office has chosen not to comment repeatedly.

Abolish ICE. Defund it completely. Claw back the $75 billion allotted to it and give it to social programs. Give every immigrant attacked/imprisoned by ICE immediate US citizenship, if they want it.
This is an excellent video by a librarian about the NYC public libraries budget situation. Everyone in NYC should watch it because it lays out the issues that @nycplan.org has been raising in a concise and good way.
Tim Walz isn't declaring an eviction moratorium in Minnesota, so many families affected by ICE are at risk of eviction in a few days. Please donate to the rent funds at keepMNhoused.com if you have some scratch.
Fascism is here and yet we insist on continuing to make things. Keep creating. It's so important. Do not let the fascists colonize your imagination or curtail your creativity.
Part of why I am insistent that public libraries must be expanded is because they can offer us a foundation for unleashing creativity and for nurturing imagination. This is an affirmative project at a time when we desperately need to be FOR things and not just against them.
but we can't afford universal health care and housing for all.
This is important yβall. This is our chance to save the stars.
Needless to say that I think about this all of the time too. And what I think that the "we" part is where things hang together and fall a part. In a multi-everything country like the U.S., the "we" is always fraught and definitely contested. It's why I think "unity" is not a useful concept.

Also, and Iβm sorry to tell you this, but I saw every single moment of this coming once ppl gleefully threw off their masks. When you abandon the most vulnerable, you are facilitating fascism. Our collective decisions brought us here - not just one man
βWhat, am I supposed to mask forever?β In public spaces, maybe! At least until we have a sterilizing vaccine! Masking is one of the easiest things I have ever done to protect myself and others and still live my life, and it is WILD to me that ppl see it as authoritarian, especially now
Can we get to 4500 letters to NY City Council by tomorrow? It only takes 30 seconds: actionnetwork.org/letters/city... - Also if you've already signed, can you please get 4 others to do the same?
Itβs a great film. Perhaps the mayor should watch it, as it may inspire him to keep his funding pledge to libraries.

I really appreciate this question. Thank you. You can help us by spreading the word through your networks. There are bound to be NYC residents in those networks. We need them to take action.
My thoughts on how critical fully funded public libraries are to any Left political project in the U.S. open.substack.com/pub/prisoncu...
Libraries are among the few public institutions that represent the kind of world we want to live in. They must be fought for.
I regularly see people wondering how it's possible that there are so many musicians and writers and film makers and artists from a tiny nation like Iceland.
And the answer is really simple: State funding for art education and artists. I literally get a salary from the government to write books.
OK, letβs discuss whatβs happened with the proposed NYC public libraries budget for FY 27. Mayor Mamdani @mayor.nyc.gov released his preliminary budget yesterday. This kicks off the city budget process. [Long thread]
I hope New Yorkers will challenge Mamdani about this. Too often, people feel they need to be absolutely for or against a politician β ignoring their missteps or throwing them out with the bathwater. You can like and/or believe in someone and still challenge them to deliver on their promises.
There are already a handful of Council Members who are on record as supporting the 0.5% demand for public libraries. You can find them here: nycplan.org/scorecards/l...
Don't see your member on here? Then reach out to ask them to get on board.
You can send the Mayor an email here to let him know that you expect 0.5% of the city expense budget to be allocated to our public libraries: www.nyc.gov/mayors-offic... - thanks.
Hi, I was very disappointed to see that the preliminary budget does not include theΒ stable 0.5% of the city expense budget to public libraries that Mayor Mamdani repeatedly promised. Per his campaign website: As Mayor, I will end the practice of using library funding as a bargaining chip in budget negotiations and commit 0.5% of NYCβs budget to libraries, ensuring we have enough revenue for robust services and well-staffed facilities. .5% would be approximately $635 m and we are not even close. The newΒ budget currently allocates $491 million, or .39% As you are well aware, our libraries are in desperate need of increased funding. Please put pressure on the administration to make good on their promise. More than ever, we need libraries! Thank you,

What we are asking if you live in NYC is that you not passively sit back and expect that things will "happen" or "change" but to be actively involved in making things happen and to change them. Do the very small thing of sending a letter to your Council member & CALL THEM. It's really easy to do.
