A great blue heron perches on a fishing pier at a local nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this horizontal color photograph, the heronβs head fills the frame in left profile. Gusts of 24 mph wind curl the feathers around its head. Its beak appears peeling and weathered, and faint marks suggest scars that may be healing from potential fighting during mating season. The background is a soft bokeh of blurred yellow vegetation across the pond, creating a muted backdrop. Its piercing yellow eye is encircled by a vivid periwinkle-violet hueβan intensified breeding coloration that appears during mating season to help attract a mate. Photo by Kort Duce

A European starling sings from a bridge in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical black-and-white photograph, the starling is silhouetted in the upper right quadrant of the frame with its beak open in song. The background is pure white. The bridge on which it perches adds a strong graphic element, appearing as a dark arch beneath the bird. In the lower left quadrant, a rectangular opening in the bridge reveals the white background, giving the composition an almost abstract quality. Photo by Kort Duce

Great set of photographs Rob!
It is bittersweet. I havenβt been close enough to photograph a heron in over a month. I have walked plenty with my camera too. Then, on the day I hear the news, this one permitted me to take its picture for about an hour. I needed that to help calm myself.
A red-winged blackbird finds a perch during sunset at one of my favorite local parks in Longmont, Colorado. In this horizontal color photograph, the blackbird is positioned on what appears to be a stump but is actually a small section of a treeβs root system from a tree that fell years ago. The bird sits in the upper left-hand quadrant of the frame, one claw slightly spread as it searches for a better grip. The background glows gold from sunlight reflecting off the pondβs surface. The blackbirdβs vivid red shoulder patchβaccented with a band of gold beneath itβstands out clearly, echoing the warm tones of the background. Photo by Kort Duce

A great blue heron braces itself against the wind while perched on a fishing pier in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical color photograph, the heronβs upper body, neck, and head fill the frame. Across the pond, blurred brown and yellow vegetation creates a soft, muted backdrop. Gusts of wind lift the feathers along its body and sweep the plumes on its head upward and back, giving the bird a wild, electrified appearance. Its piercing yellow eyes are encircled by a vivid periwinkle-violet hueβan intensified breeding coloration that emerges during mating season to help attract a mate. Photo by Kort Duce
Thank you all for the support in this difficult time! I really appreciate it!
Yesterday this beautiful great blue heron permitted me to take its picture at one of my favorite parks.
I have walked plenty recently, but havenβt taken many pictures in over a month. It felt great to take pictures!
My father, Kenneth B. Duce, 77, passed away today after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Iβll miss him. He supported my artistic dreams my entire life! I love you dad!
Thank you! I have been absent. My father is dying and I am dealing with the dynamics of a dysfunctional family.
Thank you very much!
Thank you Rob!
