"Thaw" by Edward Thomas
"Over the land half freckled with snow half-thawed
The speculating rooks at their nests cawed,
And saw from elm-tops, delicate as a flower of grass,
What we below could not see, Winter pass."

A Guardian headline reading “Misery for many as rain falls for 40 days in some parts of UK”, illustrated with a flooded playground (in Chertsey, Surrey)
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/feb/10/misery-for-many-as-rain-falls-for-40-days-in-some-parts-of-uk
This is the second image of a flooded playground I’ve seen in the last few days illustrating the impact of heavy rain on our everyday lives
It’s an important reminder that space for children’s play needs to be climate-resilient too - and indeed that playspace can mitigate extreme weather.

Absolutely gobsmacked. One of the most amazing birding sights I’ve seen in Northumberland - here’s some of the 30 Cranes (up to 38 were reported by others) that spent the afternoon in a field next to the A1 just north of Alnwick. #NEbirding #UKbirding #birds

Wintery images (1) snowy tree tunnel; (2) sunlight coming through brown snow covered leaves; (3) snow-covered dried hogweed flower
Day 10 #12dayswild and I couldn't not wrap up warm and go for a wander around in the newly fallen snow❄️
Nature was in her element- everything was elegantly dressed in white, from the trees to a dried-out hogweed flower. The sun and blue sky lit everything up - gorgeous!

A child being pulled on a sled in the snow
“When it snows, children take over the city: they sleigh, throw snowballs, make snowmen and are more visible than ever. But what a city needs for its children has to be more durable than snow.” (Aldo van Eyck)

The RSPB invited the British public to vote on this year’s Bird of the Year. Guess which bird won with 81% of the vote? A bird who needs the prize to be swift bricks! Oh yes, the swift won. Email your MP now about swifts. We need to pull together for Britain’s most popular bird

A raven
OS map show Ramsdean, just outside Findon in West Sussex.
Bird of the place-name 93: RAMSDEAN (WSsx). OE hramn + denu. ‘The raven’s valley.’ Close to where I grew up, just outside Worthing. Near a Roman site and Iron Age Cissbury. Mentioned in a 10th charter. #birdsandplace #naturewriting
