The ideas which would later become Graveyard Shift were inspired mainly by Hard Hat, from Exidy. It wound up becoming a very different game, but I found the idea of moving symbols around an ever-changing grid of obstacles captivating.
Originally, Graveyard Shift was going to be a very different game revolving around letters and spelling, as seen in this ancient mock-up here. This proved to be a bit tedious in practice for only one player - but maybe with two...
