‘A very dangerous person’: alarm as Pete Hegseth revels in carnage of Iran war Critics say brash, bombastic Fox News host out of his depth to guide US military through murky new Middle East conflict

“I wish I could say how cavalier, obtuse and hopeless Secretary Hegseth is at leading the Pentagon. I can’t even muster the words to describe his self-adulation, matched only in scope by his apparent moral depravity.”

This is not the best part of the firing, but it’s in the Top 10.

Kristi Noem has done a stunning amount of damage and it’s good she’s gone.

But this doesn’t change the fact that we need a complete overhaul of DHS, impartial investigations into the killings of two American citizens, and information on children that were taken from Minnesota.

Of course. No one wanted this war. They wanted food and health care and energy prices to go down. Now all those things will cost more.

It's a war of folly by a doddering old man who likes when things blow up and needs to distract us from the child sex ring he's connected to.

It really is amazing how much of political punditry, *especially* elite outfits in NYC and Washington, still embrace this bizarre idea that rural spaces represent the "Real America" while metropolitan areas, where most (presumably real) Americans actually live, should be held in contempt.

Me too - exactly this kind of thing. Reviewing Theatre of Hate live and spending the whole review exalting Kirk Brandon’s ears.

I think it was the overall deeply insulting and disrespectful tone of the piece that offended.

But also sceptical re the story - can’t imagine there were that many Dead fans reading the NME. Or even that many Dead fans in the Uk!

‘Charisma is a form of psychosis’: inspiring Eric Clapton, having kids at 70 … the irreverent life of post-punk puppeteer Ted Milton He crossed paths with William Burroughs, Terry Gilliam and Spitting Image while whipping up almighty grooves with his band Blurt. What's happening to you, Milton? It's a big old Guardian feature, that's what. With a film about Ted, made by his own family, coming soon, I chatted with him about his poetry, puppetry and wayward life and times, with Roger Law of Spitting Image spitting facts

Donald Trump said today that "Republicans should say, we want to take over. We should take over the voting."

My life's work is to prevent that from happening. I built a law firm to stop it. I started Democracy Docket as another tool in the fight for democracy. Subscribe now. hubs.ly/Q03M8rql0

Rangers: Suburban Tours Read Simon Reynolds’ review of the album.

Wrote about one of my fave records of the 21st Century, the 2010 Rangers album Suburban Tours, whose dreamy guitar haze is shot through with nostalgia for growing up amid Sun Belt sprawl. An opportunity also to get a jump on nostalgia for chillwave (a genre itself shot through with nostalgia).

Once again, the main day of Tea Party protests had about 300,000 nationwide, but saw endless coverage.

The No Kings protests had about 7,000,000 nationwide, and many media outlets reacted with a yawn.

No Kings was nearly 25x as big as the Tea Party but the Tea Party got 25x the attention.

"The original #NoKings protest was 250 years ago. We've had democracy since then. Now we have a would-be king who wants to take it away—King Donald the First. Fuck that. Stand up and be counted in the nationwide No Kings protest on October 18."
