The state can easily adopt bike lane design guidelines (which are sitting on the Minister's desk) for Strategic Cycling Corridors, and require councils to comply with them, which would stop Elizabeth Street from being downgraded. streets-alive-yarra.org/journal/move...

I’m kicking off a local campaign to support some proposed upgrades to a local rat run which will turn it back into a local street for residents - safer, greener, and quieter.

Sign up to show your support, especially if you’re a local.

Another way to make this point:

Every time an American decides to ride Amtrak instead of drive a car, the US transportation network gets a little safer.

NHTSA never says this, but they should.

Did you know that the modal filter on Page Street, outside Clifton Hill Primary School, was installed in 1977?

Modal filters are great, and we encourage Council to install more, as part of the Wellington Street traffic calming project.

The state government has asked the City of Yarra to build 44,000 new homes by 2050. Where will they go? Our article takes a look at the new Housing Capacity Assessment Platform (HCAP) and the Access to Opportunities and Services (ATOS) tool, to see the possible impact on Yarra.

The Quarterly Community Report to be presented on Tuesday night shows that Yarra has 201 car sharing vehicles. If we want to create a city that is accessible to all, without the need to own a car, then we need many more car share vehicles; i.e. a target of 2,000, ten times more than we have now.

Is it difficult to find a park near your house? One solution is to change our streets to 'Ticket Zone' so that the system can limit the number of visitor vehicles permitted to park in each street or neighbourhood.

'We’re a bunch of people
from Collingwood...

...who would love to enjoy a green, safe and pleasant
Wellington Street - and put an end to the thousands of cars
that rat-running through our neighbourhood.

The council put an end to rat running in Fitzroy years ago, but
Collingwood is still used as a short cut. Wellington Street can
get chockers full of bumper to bumper traffic at peak times,
filling the neighbourhood with air pollution, noise and
endangering pedestrians and cyclists.

So the Council has now proposed some design options (see
below) to stop this non-local traffic passing through, making it
a better street to walk, ride, play, and have a beer on.

It’s a great idea! You might have ideas for tweaks to the design
here and there, and that’s great. Let’s just agree to this
massive improvement in principle.

Let’s get this traffic out of our neighbourhood and make a
cleaner and safer street for all.'

New York City has a new Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, who is committed to building better streets. If New York City can do it, we can too.

In our opinion, Yarra is now governed by a backwards bloc who are reversing previous strategic direction, and previous gains made for a more beautiful, liveable, and accessible city, and it’s the wrong direction for an inner-city area that’s going to see a significant increase in its population.

Six of the nine councillors formed a voting bloc, and over the first year they have voted to:

- cancel the park outside Richmond Library
- narrow the Elizabeth Street bike lanes to bring back car parking
- cancel intersection treatments that were safer for people biking

A new council was elected in October 2024. Now that a year has passed, let’s look back on who was elected, what scores we had given them, and how they performed for freedom, equality, social justice, responsibility, and a world of beauty.

Budd Street – Streets Alive Yarra Inc.

Collingwood has a shortage of public open space, but there's a proposal to add a little bit more by converting some of Budd Street into a pocket park thanks to local councillor @sophie-wade.bsky.social.

We’d like to see the Victoria State Government publish a similar document for Greater Melbourne, highlighting:

bus reform
on-street priority for buses and trams
expanding the Strategic Cycling Corridor network
30 km/h zones
modal filters within High Access Neighbourhoods

In particular, their β€œsafer streets toolkit” highlights:
Low Traffic Neighbourhoods
Expanding the strategic cycle network
Lower speed limits, i.e. 30 km/h zones
