God I almost want to sit and just write a bunch of nostalgia bait about the hyper specific games I put hundreds of hours into. From Poker TD to Nexus Wars to Keystone Card Game to fucking BarCraft... There's nothing that even compares really
Not to mention TFT, where the custom scene gave birth to DOTA, whence comes LoL. StarCraft 2 arcade maps made me fall in love with Deckbuilders before Slay the Spire was even in development, and Deckbuilders are 90% of what I play now. I will never forgive Activision.
StarCraft and Brood War are still the best online gaming experience I've ever had. I never got good at playing actual RTS, but I got a lifelong obsession with tower defenses and even taught myself how to build them. Old blizzard "arcade" maps are still unmatched.
I wish I shared your optimism and hope that ultimately you're the one vindicated
