A porcupine perched on a tree trunk that has been partially uprooted by the wind, so it’s nearly horizontal
You may need a thing about now that isn’t awful. Here. Have a porcupine in a tree that I spotted near the St Lawrence River. I talked to them for a while and told them they were cool. I hope they got the vibe.

Thank you! At an event last night I said "If the word hope doesn't work for you try, 'Never fucking surrender.'" The word hope seems too sunny to a lot of people, but the heart of it as I'm interested in it is: we make the future in the present, if we show up, and that never surrender part.

I know that the people who need to read this aren’t here, but here goes:
Rules of engagement aren’t for the enemy. They’re for you. They’re for your soldiers when they’re captured or wounded. They’re for your civilians when they’re in range of the enemy. They’re for your allies, to reassure.

A male common redpoll on a frosty spruce tree branch with a warm yellow orange background.
He is a small finch with brown stripes, a red stained chest and a bright red cap. He also has an adorable little yellow beak!
This winter, we had hoped to see the large flocks that an irruption can bring, but that hasn’t happened.
But I think the non stop chattering of all the pine siskins finally drew the attention of some redpolls!
This male Common Redpoll was busy foraging in the branches on a frosty morning!

black and white portrait of Edward Horety in a long fur coat. He is bald, with a full white beard. Gorey wears rings on most fingers and it looking at the camera over the top of his half-moon spectacles.
A black and white, heavily cross-hatched Gorey drawing of a man hunched over a table, writing with a long pen. An ornate victrola is perched on the table in front of him.
Gorey drawing of a small crowd in formal wear at a reception or party. Several of them, some but not all clearly men, wear black tie. One bearded man has a large fut coat. A woman near the center wears a diaphanous cape that looks like something out of a Klimt painting, or a peacock.
The cover of the Gashlycrumb Tinies. Death, holding an umbrella, shades a group of unfortunate children.
Writer and illustrator Edward Gorey was born #OTD in 1925. Not in a mouldering old room down the drafty halls of an Edwardian manor on a bleak and windswept moor, but right here in CHICAGO, of all places!

the main reason to go after the rich is that if you don’t the entire structure of your society is predicated on the whims of people who are entirely disconnected from ordinary life

A red-tailed hawk in a ditch just outside of town. After mis-calculating a hunting effort for a vole, he is shown here launching back up to a wire. His wings are up and his body and pants are showing. A good look at his red tail as well.
I came upon this red-tailed hawk as he was in the ditch hunting. He had dropped down from a tree and was doing the grab-the-grass technique hoping to feel and catch a mole or vole. He came up empty this time and launched back up to the wire.

Opinion | Affordability and the ‘Epstein Class’ Will Define American Politics
“When Citizens United was decided in 2010, billionaires had spent $18 million on the 2000 election, $13M 2004 and $16M in 2008. Then came the deluge. In 2012 it was $231M, and nearly doubled again in next three election cycles —to $682M in 2016, $1.2 billion in 2020 and $2.6 billion in 2024.” Gift:
