Meanwhile, Iwi leaders are meeting to discuss the future. The goal? Equal partnership in governance. "Leave the Pākehās and their parliamentary system, we’ll come we’ll talk to them, but it’ll be in a body where we’re both talking to each other on equal levels."
"They will not tolerate it," says Professor Margaret Mutu about young Māori facing restrictions. A new generation is rising up to protect their rights.
Massive preparations underway: Tent cities, shuttle services, camping grounds. This is organisation on an unprecedented scale!
The context? Major political shifts as Māori face challenges to Treaty protections. Remember this viral haka in Parliament? That energy is building...

Key focus? Amplifying Indigenous knowledge. Honoring 200+ years of Indigenous resistance. Creating a safe space to strategize.
Challenging the current National Anti-Racism Framework. Pushing for something fiercer, more confronting.
300 participants. Academics, activists, artists. All united with one goal: Confronting racial violence and systemic racism.
Professor Chelsea Watego is clear: This isn't about debating if racism exists. "We know the material effects of racism." This is about action, strategy, and resistance.
Breaking ground: First national symposium tackles racism head-on in Magandjin (Brisbane) 🔥
The National Symposium Unifying Anti-Racist Research and Action is from the 23rd to the 24th of January.

Let's support each other this school year. Every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and dream big 💫
Need support? The Smith Family is here to help.
But here's what matters most to parents: Their kids feeling good about school, following their dreams, and becoming good citizens.
Behind every financial worry is a parent's hope for their child's future. These aren't just statistics - they're family stories of determination.
The reality check: Digital devices, uniforms, excursions, and internet access top the list of financial worries. 1 in 4 families they support are Indigenous.
Back to school season brings mixed emotions for many Indigenous families. The Smith Family's latest research shows both challenges and hopes 📚

Critical moment for Queensland. What we do now echoes for generations. Time to ask: what kind of future are we building?
This isn't just about politics. It's about our shared future, about understanding where we've been to know where we're going.
New government's stance: They don't see truth-telling as unifying. But here's the question - can we truly unite without facing our shared history?
The stakes? Massive. Creamer's words hit hard: "We are not going to get another opportunity at this in the next decade, two decades, in my lifetime."
Queensland's Truth-Telling Inquiry hangs in the balance. Chair Joshua Creamer (Waanyi & Kalkadoon) says this pause is unprecedented - never before has an independent inquiry been shut down by a change in government.
Looking ahead: This isn't just about youth justice. It's about breaking cycles of trauma. Every kid deserves a chance to heal.

What we actually need:
- Trauma-informed organizations
- Better recognition of trauma symptoms
- Intensive clinical support services
- Focus on healing, not punishment
The evidence is clear - we need to change our approach.
The big question: Why are we still focusing on punishment when it clearly doesn't work? Research shows punitive responses can actually increase risky behaviors. We're literally making things worse.
Here's what's wild: Our rates are 4x HIGHER than international averages. Lead researcher A/Prof Malvaso was shocked too. This isn't just a problem - it's a crisis that needs immediate attention.
Between 1/3 and 2/3 of youth in detention reported:
- Family violence
- Parental separation
- Living with family members struggling with substance use
- Having a parent in prison
These aren't "bad kids." They're survivors of tough circumstances.
The numbers are confronting:
- 70% experienced physical abuse
- 81% faced emotional abuse
- 17% endured sexual abuse
And that's just the beginning. This isn't just statistics - these are real young people with real trauma.
New @UofAdelaide research reveals stark reality: childhood trauma rates 4x higher in youth detention compared to global averages. Time to shift from punishment to healing? 🤔
Key finding: 81% reported emotional abuse. We need trauma-informed solutions, not more bars and cells.
