Examining the Lower‐Order Structure of Openness/Intellect Using Traditional and Extended Bass‐Ackwards Methods Objective In this study, the lower-order structure of Openness/Intellect is explored using Goldberg's “bass-ackward” hierarchical factor analysis approach, including Forbes' extension to this method.....

What does a hierarchical structure of Openness look like? 🤔

In this newly published paper, Luke Smillie and I examine the lower order facets of openness using Goldberg's bass-ackward approach across three samples.

Bit of a late post...but wanted to share the most beautiful room where I had the privilege to present. Thank you for a great conference, #ISSID2025!

Great write up. Would a similar distribution appear when looking at hedges g? Currently grappling with a staggering amount of studies reporting gs of 2, 5, and even as high as 12 in my meta analysis 😮‍💨

If researchers find Cohen's d = 8, no they didn't I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the plausibility of standardized effect sizes in the last year. From a trustworthiness assessment perspective, (standardized) effect sizes have a great combinat...

If researchers find Cohen’s d = 8, no they didn’t.

(probably.)

Thoughts on the distribution of Cohen's d values in psychology and why we should think about their plausibility when reading articles.

I didn't get the results I was expecting (extremely high heterogeneity), but the discussions I've had during my little lab visit tour and at ARP, about re-evaluating the role of meta analyses has been encouraging 🥰 hope to talk more meta analysis things in Vienna at #ISSID2025!

Had a great first time at #ARP2025 and it was lovely to share (initial) results of our meta-analysis of well being interventions.

(3/3) Given that certain kinds of people are drawn to meditation, its important to consider potential selection effects in meditation research!

We tried to test this using a manipulation of our study advertising but did not find evidence for consistent selection effects.

(2/3) We found that openness and agreeableness predicted having tried meditation at least once.

Curiosity, openness and agreeableness also predicted positive attitudes and (lowered) perceived barriers to meditation practice, whereas neuroticism predicted (higher) barriers to practice.

What kinds of people are drawn to meditation?

Excited to share the first paper from my PhD (w/ @ntvandam.bsky.social and Luke Smillie) now out in Mindfulness (doi.org/10.1007/s126...)

Across 2 samples, we examined personality predictors of meditation and related constructs (1/3)

(2/2) ...but I also dabble in personality structures. Above pic is from my talk at ACPID24 examining openness' hierarchical structure using bass-ackwards methods (paper currently in the works!)

Keen to connect with researchers in similar areas 🤗

Hi Bluesky 👋

I'm a 3rd yr PhD student at the University of Melbourne

My phd looks at whether personality predicts #meditation, including differences in experiences during practice

Broadly I'm interested in personality-situation interactions behind different #well-being practices..
