Why Edna Wrote Teddy and Minnie, 1943 Genealogy research and commentary by Marian Burk Wood, speaker and author of "Planning a Future for Your Family's Past," available from Amazon.com.

#Genealogy #FamilyHistory When my aunt served as a WAC in England, France, Belgium during #WWII, she was befriended by a lovely lady in Shropshire. Wartime letters written by that lady to my family illuminate home-front thoughts & feelings climbingmyfamilytree.blogspot.com/2026/03/why-...

1880 census from Burr Oak, Jewell, Kansas

1880 census from Burr Oak, Jewell, Kansas

One of my odder #genealogy finds was my Czech Horak ancestors in 1880.

They had just moved to Jewell County, Kansas that year. It lists their surname as Hork (transcription was Hock), and says they're from France!

I found them by going page by page, looking for bigger families and immigrants.

Another big shift in autosomal DNA testing. FamilyTreeDNA is moving to targeted sequencing, meaning more coverage and higher resolution where it matters for genealogy. We’re watching genetic genealogy grow up in real time. I’m especially watching how this impacts distant match discovery. #genealogy

What I Learned from Nellie Block's AR 2 Genealogy research and commentary by Marian Burk Wood, speaker and author of "Planning a Future for Your Family's Past," available from Amazon.com.

#Genealogy Not everyone coming to America immigrated through Ellis Island! One big takeaway from my great aunt's AR-2 alien registration form, plus her self-reported birth date. Worth $20 to me to learn a few new details #FamilyHistory climbingmyfamilytree.blogspot.com/2026/02/what...

#Genealogy #FamilyHistory #52Ancestors The New York Census asked where/when someone was naturalized. Great clue to look for the documents! But what if no date/place noted for children's citizenship? The year was the big clue, due to change in US law climbingmyfamilytree.blogspot.com/2026/02/what...

Mind the Gap: Alex and Blanche Married Far from Family Genealogy research and commentary by Marian Burk Wood, speaker and author of "Planning a Future for Your Family's Past," available from Amazon.com.

#Genealogy I wondered where my cousin got married, since my initial research didn't turn up a cert or even an announcement. Then I redid my research on another site and up popped the marriage, 2800 miles from home. Why go so far away? #FamilyHistory climbingmyfamilytree.blogspot.com/2026/02/mind...

I received my first alien registration file back from the National Archives on one of my ancestors (United States for context). I was hoping it would be a large file - only two pages but it did give me some additional information. It's the roll of the dice in #genealogy.
