Multi-omic analysis reveals transkingdom gut dysbiosis in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease Nature Metabolism, Published online: 02 July 2025; doi:10.1038/s42255-025-01318-6High-resolution multi-omic profiling indicates widespread gut dysbiosis in individuals with MASLD, also affecting the virome, and reveals microbial signatures that can classify MASLD and its subtypes.

Viewing MASLD through an integrative gut microbiome lens Nature Metabolism, Published online: 02 July 2025; doi:10.1038/s42255-025-01300-2The gut microbiome is pivotal to the development of liver diseases in multifaceted ways. A recent study uses a multi-omics, multi-kingdom approach to analyse the gut dysbiosis in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, highlighting a substantial role for oral-typical microorganisms and their associated metabolites.

💡Altered metabolic profiles in MASLD, including reduced bile acids (e.g., isoallolithocholic acid) and increased long-chain acylcarnitines.

🧬All data are available at biom-mass.org, as well as the NIH-sponsored repositories. (5/6)

💡Distinct microbial signatures between non-lean MASLD (body mass index [BMI] ≥25 kg/m2) vs. lean MASLD (BMI <25 kg/m2)—the latter being a paradoxical subtype of a disease typically associated with increased adiposity. (4/6)

🔬Using multi-omic profiling (stool DNA, RNA, and metabolites), we discovered:
💡Transkingdom dysbiosis involving gut bacteria and viruses in MASLD
💡Widespread colonization of oral microbes, such as Veillonella and Streptococcus spp., in the gut of individuals with MASLD (3/6)

Our findings provide new insights into the gut-liver axis and the role of the microbiome in the etiopathogenesis of MASLD—a condition characterized by fat accumulation in the liver. (2/6)
