Thinking about how I was once at a con where @runwithskizzers.bsky.social said a good way to help authors combat negativity on the internet is to tell them when you enjoy their stories.

So I left a comment on the next fanfic I read.

The author responded.

She’s now my wife.

My elderly grandfather told me he was impressed by my beard. He said he should have taken testosterone because he always wanted a beard but could only grow a bright red mustache 😆

I often look up things to help me with my writing & now and then I find an old browser open to something like ‘creepiest things found in cellars’ and it takes me a min to realize that no, my computer is not compromised, that is in fact my browsing history.

I’m trying to get back into posting online & connecting with fellow readers & writers while simultaneously staying away from doom scrolling & protecting my mental health. I still haven’t found the right balance, but I’m here, I’m still writing, reading, and—occasionally—posting.

I was a victim of online harassment & bullying in the bookish community long before I came out. It’s been a few years since I’ve gotten bombarded with ☠️ threats but it’s difficult to get past something like that, especially when I’m seeing other people like me getting them for just being themselves.

Like yes, I’d love to be in more bookish spaces (online and in person) but how do I know certain writer groups are trans friendly? How do I show up online with fun silly posts when every time I open my app (almost any app these days) it won’t be full of transphobic comments or new stories?

One of the challenges I have with book marketing that I haven’t heard talked about in most book marketing advice is the extra challenges as a marginalized author. Especially right now as a trans author in the US when just existing in certain places is sometimes seen as a threat.

How to make sure more of your book money goes to LGBTQ+ authors. Beneath that text is a heart with the Pride flag colors
