Great talk by Ben Shen of @wertheimufscripps.bsky.social today at @leidenscience.bsky.social. He talked about his group's amazing work in natural product discovery. Cool insights into mining massive numbers of genomes and the power of making data openly available(1/2) www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Wertheim UF Scripps Neuroscience Chair Kirill Martemyanov, Ph.D., stands with Nobel Laureate Thomas C. SΓΌdhof, M.D., in the institute's Jupiter, Florida auditorium.
His talk focused on "adhesion" molecues that bridge synapses.
A discovery from his group is that these genes can have different functions in neurons depending on how they are spliced, and increased "excitation" is one of the factors that can change gene function. Fascinating!

Structural studies like these require a cryo electron microscope that can visualize things so small it's like seeing a nickel on the face of the moon from your back yard. These structural studies reveal basic biology and the root causes of disease. They also help scientists create new medicines.
