Asked whether he isn't betraying the Iranian people, Trump confirms that he is betraying the Iranian people. "I’d love to help them, but they have to be in a system that allows them to be helped. And right now they’re in a system that only allows failure".
Trump again cites Venezuela approvingly, as an example of what he foresees for Iran. Totally absent from his comments: any message to the Iranian people that he encouraged to rise up just 11 days ago.
Trump: Vladimir Putin (to whom he spoke today) was "very impressed with what he saw" in terms of US military success in Iran. Putin, as ever, playing him like a 🎻
He is threatening here to destroy Iranian infrastructure targets (power plants etc) if the regime continues to disrupt the Strait of Hormuz. The offramp offer to Iran appears to be: leave the Strait open, and we won't go after your power grid.
Trump's line that the USA has won, but "we haven't won enough" suggests the possibility of several more days of bombardment, before - at the behest of the Saudis and the Qataris - he folds his tent. Having plunged the region into crisis, incinerated his relationships in Europe and the Middle East.
Totally false, obviously.
