Half a year since a 7.2 magnitude devastated Taiwan’s East Coast, I report from Taroko National Park — one of the country’s top tourist attractions won’t reopen fully for years, wrecking the local economy.
It’s been a busy typhoon season for Taiwan with three direct hits. Earlier this month, I reported from the eastern city of Taitung as the largest typhoon in decades made landfall:
Indigenous land rights is a big issue on Taiwan’s rural East Coast. Meet a woman who is keeping the bulldozers at bay as she battles the local government:
Taiwan’s Orchid Island is isolated at the best of times — 50km off the main island bad weather often disrupts ferries and flights. But when Typhoon Koinu brought record breaking wind speeds of 240kmh it left the island’s 5000 residents fighting for survival. One year on, they are still struggling.
