In the context of the Olympics in progress, I’ll remind you that AA5342 was not the only tragedy for USA Figure Skating. In 1961, on this day, the whole team was killed in a plane crash in Belgium. Here is the memorial plaque at the Broadmoor, Colorado Springs, where they trained.

Flights into Biggs, the airfield used by the military here, were also rerouted when the announcement was made.

A sudden 10 day closure of airspace in a major US city like El Paso should be THE STORY, with nothing else getting any air time until at minimum someone within the US government says what’s happening and why.
It barely even registers on CNN’s site. It’s literally the last item before the page ends.

Hi y’all. El Paso City Councilmember here but also fellow avgeek. Not a usual sub for me, but here we are. We’re all trying to work out why this crazy NOTAM was issued. What I know so far (as of midnight zero six local Wednesday):
• It isn’t a typo or an error. FAA issued this NOTAM intentionally as written.
• Nobody local got advance notice. And I mean nobody — neither civilian nor military leadership.
• Military does not have carte blanche exemption. Army is fretting about their flights tomorrow just as much as everyone else.
• Albuquerque Center did not get advance notice.
