“A person can know enough from reading books to make judgement calls about these things without traditional education”
“What books have you read?”
“There were no books.”

Horrible.
We're going to see more blowback and now a spike in massive Islamophobia AND anti-semitism. Hatemongers will win.
The Infectious Disease Control & Prevention page added 12 new items to our timeline. Amid worrying increases in measles, TB, and whooping cough outbreaks, we are seeing further erosion and politicization of public health organizations and networks.

A British grandmother with a valid visa detained by ICE for 6 weeks.
"So why did ICE detain her, and keep her locked up for so long? ICE officers are paid a bonus every time they detain someone. 'Individual ICE agents get money per head that they detain – the guards told me that,' Karen says."
Kristi Yamaguchi was reminded of her journey to Olympic gold in 1992 while watching Alysa Liu seize the moment. Both are East Bay born and raised, growing up in towns less than 40 miles apart.
Where ordinary—or even extraordinary—athletes might be fueled by pressure, Alysa Liu simply doesn't feel any, ever.
I am learning right now to surprise my husband for his birthday. I have never skated before and I've fallen a lot. It is terrifying (I'm 36) but exhilarating. I try to remember that it is about the journey, and that hopefully my husband will be pleasantly surprised with whatever progress I make!
Holy fuck! 🧪

NJ lawmakers introduce the FUCK ICE Act.
The bill "permits civil action for violations of US Constitution related to immigration enforcement."
Congratulations to Dr. Rümeysa Öztürk for earning her PhD despite being unlawfully targeted by ICE for protected political speech.
Our victory in AAUP v. Rubio will enshrine rights for non-citizen students and faculty like Dr. Öztürk. Everyone deserves to learn and speak freely on our campuses.
I hope New Yorkers will challenge Mamdani about this. Too often, people feel they need to be absolutely for or against a politician — ignoring their missteps or throwing them out with the bathwater. You can like and/or believe in someone and still challenge them to deliver on their promises.
Photo of Frederick Douglass, who some say was the most photographed person of the 19th century
Happy birthday to one of the greatest, Frederick Douglass. Born into slavery, he didn't know his actual birthday, but chose to celebrate it on this day.
Please read his books and essays; please teach your children his story when they are old enough to understand.

As a fellow 36 year old, this is incredible. 💕 Happy birthday!!!!!
I think collectively, we at least partially wanted the child at the Super Bowl to be Liam because the little boy on stage looked happy and healthy and our hearts want so badly to think these children can somehow magically recover from the evils our government is doing.
Benito is a threat b/c he makes art so alluring and enjoyable you want to understand everything about it and then you end up learning about sugar and slavery and colonialism and the Taínos and Hawaii and then you probably have some thoughts of your own, and that's why art is powerful and dangerous
There should be Congressional hearings over this
kind of funny that an olympian said they are here to represent "compassion, respect, and love for others" and some people automatically knew that was a statement against them
I sincerely hope that JD Vance gets this reaction every single place he goes.
No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

I don't say this often but: I'm so proud to be a climate and environment reporter. We cover an issue that is vitally important to humanity and the natural world. 14 of my climate colleagues at the Post were laid off today and I'm devastated.

Presumptions of good faith are naive
There is a very similar pattern for Black over-representation in the military, which is often the employer of last resort in a society with rampant labor market discrimination keeping folks out of other jobs.
