New paper on dementia diagnosis trends in Denmark out in SSM's special issue on "Understanding cognitive ageing: individuals, institutions, and inequalities" 🥳

We examined nearly four decades of data (1986-2023) to understand how age, period, and birth cohort shape dementia diagnosis patterns 🔎

Slowing longevity gains and diverse health trends mean healthcare systems must prepare for new challenges. Understanding how ageing and time-to-death determine healthcare costs is critical for future planning. It was a privilege to collaborate on this important update with fantastic colleagues 🙌

Socioeconomic inequalities in survival to retirement age in Denmark: a register-based analysis - Genus Around the world, people are increasingly living to older ages. This challenges the sustainability of the pension systems. In Denmark, statutory retirement age increases gradually to account for changes in life expectancy. However, the chances of reaching retirement age are not equal across the Danish population, and raising the retirement age could disproportionally impact those of lower socioeconomic status. In this study, we investigated socioeconomic inequalities in mortality before reaching retirement age in Denmark and how a higher retirement age would affect survival to retirement across socioeconomic groups. We used Danish registry data over a 30-year period, focusing on 19 consecutive birth cohorts: 1936–1954. We assessed the probability of dying between age 50 and retirement age, set at 65 and 67, across socioeconomic groups using three dimensions of socioeconomic status: education, occupation, and income. We found that the gap in survival has widened over time between the lowest and highest socioeconomic groups for each indicator, driven mostly by limited or stagnant improvements in the lowest socioeconomic groups. Our findings show that raising the retirement age from 65 to 67 disproportionately affects individuals from lower socioeconomic groups, especially men, in absolute terms. Pension reforms that link retirement age to life expectancy are sharpening inequalities, as lower-SES groups are not only facing higher early mortality, but also experience much slower improvements in mortality.

🇩🇰 Denmark is proud about its low inequality

(and rightfully so! few countries do better)

Yet, in current Danish society, the richest quarter of males have a 5% risk of not surviving in the age period 50-65; for the poorest quarter of males this figure is… 22%🤯

And this gap is increasing 🤨

A major finding is that across 19 cohorts of retirees, consistently almost 1 in 4 low-income men do not survive between age 50 and retirement while high-income men's survival improved dramatically from 1 in 10 to 1 in 20 as shown in the figure below (panel c) 👀

Survival inequalities expand in DK by socioeconomic group. New paper by @cosmostrozza.bsky.social, @svigezzi.bsky.social, @juliacalla.bsky.social, @sandrsalek.bsky.social, @ikashnitsky.phd, find that almost 1/4 poor men vs 1/20 rich men die pre-retirement.
