'The wisdom of the British people'
No fireworks. No parties. No flags. No celebrations.
No comments from the Brexit leaders. No "wasn't that a great idea."
Six years after we left the EU - everyone knows it was a disaster.
But....
You are right of course π nevertheless I get frustrated.
You might be right. But how we got to the situation that arrived at was despairing, and it hasnβt got any better. So unless we βqualifyβ the vote when we know that social media might swing it, whatβs the answer?
Except we give them the vote as well. Critical thinking = vote. Inability to do so = no vote. We should educate and qualify young people as they gain the vote and like the driving test check them again as they age. If they prove not fit to βdriveβ they lose their licence.
Deeper, deeper and deeper she goes, where she stops, nobody knows.

The problem when trying to rehabilitate Trumpβs attachment to old European alliances is that his politics and character are aligned with the dark forces that had to be defeated for those alliances to exist. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

A dark blue mug with an American flag reads βAMERICA 1776 β 2026β
Fairly sure itβs unintentional, but the end date on this mug being sold by the Smithsonian does make it sound a little like theyβre saying America dies in 2026β¦
Almost anything was ok as long as it provoked βliberal tearsβ. Thatβs precisely why we are where we are.

It will not surprise you to learn that Toby Youngs 'Free Speech Union' has obtained a High Court injunction banning the publication of a list of its donors open.substack.com/pub/democrac...
Amazingly, Zahawi only got round to deleting the below after the press conference announcing his defection to Reform.
Reading through the FT at the moment is a strange experience: revolution, war, disaster, brutal autocratic oppression, mad dictator shit....and then "markets continue to thrive"; "record profits".
And the dystopian future has arrived. We should all have paid more attention I suppose π«€
Charlotte Nichols MP (Labour, Warrington North) says AI-generated sexual harassment must be the final straw for the UK government using X
A growing number of Labour MPs thought this needed a proper review last year: next week may see this cut through

At least Peter Jones was available for late night shopping though, right?
Has anyone done a really big survey asking not how you would vote in rerun Brexit referendum but how you *did* vote and, as far as is possible, if it even is possible, mapped it onto actual result. I bet more people now think they voted remain in 2016 than voted remain.
Consistent fluency in French probably tipped it π¬

Wow - this guy must be really, REALLY bad with money if an extra Β£208 per month will βruinβ his retirement.
Letβs take a look at his situation based on what he told the @Telegraph

If only we had some kind of person whose job it was to investigate the news and present a balanced set of challenging facts. We could call them something like βjournalistsβ. The whole craft could be called a cool name like βjournalismβ.
My attendance record in the European Parliament was the 4th worst out of 751 MEPs, yet I managed to turn up to vote AGAINST plans to tackle Russian misinformation.
Thankfully this is of no interest to the media.
You are right that with Brexit the political calculation added even more to this. Vocal minority etc etc.
Every major programme of change in nation states suffers from optimism bias. Layers of bureaucracy, politics, power, money all combine to create the modern day equivalent of the Emperorβs New Clothes. The system doesnβt βknowβ and individuals feel out of step so time after time we rinse and repeat.
So many fundamental misconceptions about how the world actually worked, and how it might turn out even worse than expected. All of the flags should have gone red with the reality gap at the NI/RoI border back in 2016/17. But optimism bias is just a permanent state of mind.
