The truth is not the average of a fact and a lie.

yeah, I don't see any plausibility in Epstein blackmailing a teen with nude pictures... his having them could be a crime depending on her age, so how would it even work? & why would a rich guy bother with such a petty sum that would invite scrutiny? makes zero sense.

i thought it really weird that it was news that she didn't lie about where she was from and what her mom did. why would she lie about those things even if she was lying about the accusations? I want to see justice & support survivors, but it has to be done rigorously for that to happen.

it's nice that someone did deep historical research on this particular instance, but it's true of all recreational drug prohibitions. data about what the drugs actually do rarely has any effect on these laws...

New analysis shows ideology, not science, drove the global prohibition of psychedelics Archival records reveal that the 1971 global ban on psychedelics was fueled by Cold War politics and media sensationalism, not medical science. This historical analysis suggests international drug laws should be updated to reflect actual scientific evidence.

Text: "For a split second I thought something had gone terribly, biblically wrong with my cat"
Picture has a cat lying in front of a pillow that has a deer head on it (could be an elk?) but the way the cat is positioned it looks like the cat has the deer/elk's head.

yeah, that's why I only use it to transcribe interviews I do myself so I know what was actually said and can check it. It often leaves out "not" so if you aren't careful, you'll quote someone saying opposite of what they meant. but better than just handwritten notes which was my earlier method.

A Pox on Fools by Thomas Levenson: 9798217155002 | PenguinRandomHouse.com: Books An urgent and profound history of vaccine skepticism, seeking to understand how our three most common fears about vaccines hardened into a lethal ideologyβ€”from a leading science writer Since the...

Self promotion alert!

My book A Pox on Fools, comes out on 5/26 (UK) & 6/9 (US).

It's a history of vax opposition, tracing RFK Jr.'s anti-vax grift back to once-somewhat plausible fears. Its goal: to help readers debunk his BS for any persuadables they know.

Preorders are a book's best friend!

Meet three scientists who said no to Epstein The warning signs included a web search, a mother’s doubts, and inklings of a β€œsexist attitude”

This is a nice contrast to all the awful behavior confirmed through the Epstein files. Proud of @jenlucpiquant.bsky.social & @seanmcarroll.bsky.social for picking up on the sexism & charlatanism right away.

How have crime rates in the United States changed over the last 50 years? Both violent and property crime are far below their 1990s peak, but some crimes see periodic rises.

Looking at the 2024 crime figures, it's absolutely insane how Trump, tech billionaires, and centrist pundits fooled everyone into thinking Biden had turned the U.S. into some Hobbesian hellscape.

50-year lows for violent crime, armed robbery, property crime. Second-lowest homicide rate.

Thanks to everyone who helped my brief ode to the opposition to Trump 2 go micro-viral.

I added a note about how Minnesotans still need our support in a mutual aid pitch, a key aspect of the growing movement against this regime. Please give if you can: www.standwithminnesota.com

They are literally killing people.

What the US did to people around the world in killing USAID, Florida is doing to Floridians.

This is abominable.

What stands out to me is treating productive capacity as a political variable(!)

Moving from 500 to 1,400 shovelers at $30/hr is a real foray into capacity expansion organized around a clear public standard, instead of letting the β€œhow do we pay for it?” frame set the ceiling in advance.
