As phosphorus becomes scarce, maize reorganizes its root system in ways that limit water uptake. This P-driven shift reduces root conductance and growth, showing that how roots are structured (not just how big they are) determines a plantโs ability to access water under stress.

Using high-throughput root imaging + mechanistic modeling, we show:
โข Strong anatomical gradients along wheat crown roots
โข Modern cultivars have smaller tissues & fewer metaxylem vessels
โข These reduce both axial & radial conductance โ ~20% lower whole-root water uptake capacity in modern lines

Figure 1: Integrated phenotyping approach for the quantification of root hydraulic properties.
Crown roots were sampled from a field experiment (Behrend et al., 2025, Preprint) and 2โ3
cm root segments at the base, mid-root and distal positions were subsampled for cross section
imaging using the Rapid Anatomics Tool (RAT) (Jones et al., 2025, Preprint). Traits obtained
from the images were used as input for the quantification of root hydraulic properties using the
GRANAR-MECHA modelling framework (Heymans et al., 2019)

Hub metabolites at the rootโmicrobiome interface: unlocking plant drought resilience
Drought is one of the most devastating environmental challenges, severely affecting agriculture, ecosystems, and global food security. Effective strategies to predict and mitigate drought are limited. The rootโsoilโmicrobiome interface is pivotal in mediating plant resilience to drought. Recent studies highlight dynamics between plant root exudates and microbial communities, influencing stress tolerance through chemical signaling under drought. By integrating plant molecular biology, root chemistry, and microbiome research, we discuss insights into how these mechanisms can be harnessed to enhance crop resilience. Here, we focus on the interplay between plants and their microbiomes with metabolites as a central point of interactions. We synthesize recent developments, identify critical knowledge gaps, and propose future directions to leverage plantโmicrobe interactions to improve plant drought tolerance.

Two-panel figure illustrating root hydraulic conductance in wheat cultivars. Panel (a) shows a line graph of pressure chamber measurements of root hydraulic conductance (Krs) over the years of release from 1900 to 2000, with a downward trend indicated by a dashed line and shaded confidence interval. Panel (b) presents CPlantBox simulations comparing root hydraulic conductance (Krs) over time (in days) for two cultivars: S. Dickkopf (1895) and Tommi (2002), with the older cultivar showing higher conductance.
