finally. about time you werenโt busy ๐
Social media has killed cryptids. The odd humans youโd mistake for creatures of the night in small towns or the woods are now busy going viral on the internet.
I am not here for Europeans telling me Americans don't know how crazy things are. The Nazis are killing people over here at the moment so we're busy but thanks for the input. I had hoped for solidarity but I suppose I'll have to settle for sneering condescension instead.
Alt text, because one would think folks would want news about a general strike to go as far as it can.

There's about 8.5 million people in New York City. There are 38 whole states that have lower population than that. -Its GDP is about $1.3 *trillion* just for the city itself. The one city carries about half of NY State's economy. It makes 60% of Canada's GDP in an average year. (Including the metropolitan area, it handily out-earns Canada) It also takes in about 57 million tourists a year, in a good year, from here and abroad (so when the tourism industry takes a nosedive due to, say, COVID or international boycotts, it matters.) There's also a less-obvious thing: When things go sour economically in NYC, people stop spending money. with THAT many people, even small changes in spending habits are going to make a difference, and just through 'that group of 8.5 million people is spending less, we're gonna have to start laying people off' or "a lot of people moved here from NY because they can't afford to stay there", that affects the entire US.
-If, instead, you're interested in the Democratic Party, NYC is a good indicator of where at least part of that party's head is , right now. (NYC politics is so in the 'blue column' that the party's primary is considered an unoffical mayoral election unto itself- that is, since it's assumed most people will vote Democrat, the contest then often becomes "who will the Democratic candidate be?"- Cuomo losing and then running Independent was news. (Because the Democrats are so dominant on sheer voting base, there have been open attempts by actually-Republican candidates to run as Democrat just so they get any sort of attention. Like, they weren't even making a pretense.) Mamdani became candidate up-and-over the Democratic leadership's wishes (everyone they had for endorsements seems to have backed Cuomo- Bill Clinton came out to endorse Cuomo, back in June. And even after Mamdani won the primary, the Democratic leadership were lukewarm at best toward him ('vote blue no matter who' being disabled for this one apparently.) This signals something's going on with the Democrats' base vs the party leadership, which is also news. -There's a bunch of little things that tie the President to NYC. Not just that a lot of his history, legal record and buildings are here, but that he endorsed Cuomo, not even Sliwa (the actual, official GOP candidate for Mayor)- but I'll leave that for someone else.
This isn't to say you should be interested in New York mayoral politics if you're not. (I actually get it- while I live in NYC now, I grew up in New England and somehow knew who NYC's mayor was by osmosis... doesn't mean I liked that or cared, at the time!), but there are reasons that other people might.
if you are a person living outside NYC going โwhy should I care who the NYC mayor is???โ thatโs totally fair, no hate to you! here is a very good comment from u/current_poster that helps explain why it matters, and why Mamdaniโs win is notable

Question I'm sick and tired of seeing these thugs terrorize big events and am worried that they will try to interrupt Limp Bizkit's set.
