I don’t find the sentiment that you don’t know the strongest love until you have a child to be true. I do believe that you do not fully know fear until you have a child.

America cannot long remain free, nor first among nations, if it becomes the kind of place where universities are dismantled because they don't align politically with the current head of the government.

It’s horrific that there are students who lived through Parkland and are now going through a second school shooting at FSU.

The government has failed our children. It doesn’t have to be this way.

I was on campus today, ran to a locked lab when I got the alert, was locked down for hours.

My 3y old was also locked down at FSU childcare.

I am still very much in shock, and scared. This is so preventable. Thank you for being the only politician I’ve seen so far for saying something, Sen Booker

Senator Booker has moved me to tears multiple times and is STILL GOING. What an absolute badass.

I just finished a πŸ‘ŽπŸΌ self-improvement book & kept thinking how it would be torn apart in a peer review YET it’s not subject to that. Would love to start a club of scientists someday to peer review these books & post it with supports that may actually help the people trying to better themselves.

I had a convo with my husband last week about what we love about America, what actually makes it great. The landscape and national parks were #1 on both of our lists. This image, and the events that led to it, feel devastating. I have immense gratitude for these fed workers.

I’m not sure if it’s because I’m a baby academic or because the situation is so niche and nuanced, but I’ve been struggling to explain to my friends and family how cutting NIH, NSF, and IES funding will disrupt our higher education and health systems, some of the things that actually make us great.

Goran
World - yesterday

As someone who grew up under an authoritarian regime, I can offer one crucial piece of advice: time is everything. If you don’t stand up nowβ€”if you don’t protest, resist, disrupt, and refuse to complyβ€”you may lose your country forever. Authoritarianism thrives on silence, hesitation, and fear. The longer people wait, the more entrenched the regime becomes, making resistance exponentially harder. Every moment of inaction is a moment the regime uses to tighten its grip. History has shown that those who act early have the best chance of reclaiming their freedom. The time to fight back is now.

To quell the anxiety of making a late-ish in life career switch to academia, right as NIH gets nerfed, I started seeds for my garden today.

4 weeks later than I should have, because I’m a PhD student so absolutely nothing is on time in my life except for course assignments.

Grow, babies, grow 🌱

This is an excellent explainer. Witty, clear, and appropriately dire.

Make them tell you, specifically, what you're not allowed to do. Don't make changes you guess that they want. Don't offer them a menu of things that you infer they might be telling you not to do. Do the work you proposed, and received funding to do, unless instructed otherwise in specific detail.

During my maternity β€œleave” last sem, I helped write 3 trainee fellowship applications to NIH & NSF. Probably ~50 hrs of my time, certainly hundreds of theirs. All have reviews occurring in ~month. In some cases it affects their ability to stay in my lab. This grant review shutdown is devastating.
