I don't experience a lot of commercials anymore, but I remember ones prior like you describe and right there with you.

Call the people you love and tell them you love them.
Um, let's fucking hope not!
The "backlash" to Watergate was a lot of insults and cursing, then a presidential pardon, then 5 decades of the most worthless, wealthiest people scheming to make it impossible to hold rich/powerful people accountable ever again.
WE DON'T WANT BACKLASH: WE WANT JUSTICE.
BASH: Is this measles outbreak a consequence of the administration undermining support for vaccines?
DR OZ: I don't believe so. Secretary Kennedy has been advocating for measles vaccines
BASH: Oh, come on
Just because good news is worth celebrating:
There is now a Prep medication that is an *every six month* injection.
HIV has, effectively, a vaccination.
Quote from the Boston Review analysis of Dem conventional wisdom on 2 points: First, that Democrats must abandon "the left" and "extreme" views while embracing "moderation" and "popular" ideas if they wish to win elections. Second that winning elections is the only way to stop fascism. Here's the quote in full: "More fundamentally, the popularist fixation on polls undermines the movement energy required to confront authoritarian threats. Popularists see voters as fixed points—or at least extremely rigid ones—instead of as agents whose preferences can be mobilized and transformed. But in moments of democratic crisis, politics is a search for the right movement, not the right maneuver. Playing defense forfeits the moral clarity and collective purpose that have sustained successful anti-authoritarian movements worldwide."
Trans ppl get told all the time we have to vote for 2nd class citizenship if Dems nominate someone who views trans folks as 2nd class, since the alternative is voting for trans genocide or doing nothing to impede that genocide.
This is, of course, wrong and stupid. From the Boston Review:
And there it is...
A tweet comparing how AIDS patients during the AIDS epidemic starting in 1988 (7 years after the start of the pandemic) and the COVID pandemic.
This tweet which NIH Director Bhattacharya retweeted raises some interesting points (although perhaps not the ones that they intended).
The tweeter notes how AIDS was treated when he started medical school in the San Francisco Bay area in 1988.
This is misinformed. Sorry for a long 🧵

Oh look. Another one.
This is my shocked face.
I remember when a cousin failed the psych test for a certain LEO position and my family was shocked--SHOCKED, I say--that it was possible. (Despite the inherent bigotry same family exudes in general for generations prior and since.)

Ugh. With everything going on, I had no idea they'd done this.
Thanks for the head's up. Wonder if this is related to their new patron program I got a notice about either end of last year or earlier this year. So much going on.
If you, like me, have spent the last four days randomly breaking down in tears, that’s because you’re a good fucking person who knows better.
Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
You are not the broken one. They are.
Judge Kacsmaryk rejects challenge by West Texas A&M University's LGBQT club to drag show ban, saying the First Amendment doesn't protect "self-expression in all forms, and certainly not the libertine 'expressive conduct' absolutism envisioned" by the group. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
I can't believe I'm posting this video - but we actually have to have a conversation about the real world implications of America going to war over Greenland.
Let me walk you through it. It doesn't turn out well for us.
This afternoon, retired Army general Stanley McChrystal spoke at the retirement ceremony hosted by HRC for six trans service members who were forced out under Trump’s ban.
“I shouldn’t have to be thanked for being here. First off, we shouldn’t be here. This shouldn’t be happening.”

thedishranawaywithmyspoons [tumblr]. ••• Want an easy, low-effort New Years resolution that will actually have a tangible, exponentially positive impact on your life and your community? Resolve to start wearing a mask again in public in 2026. Give a big Fuck You to the fascists who want to control you, the capitalists who want to exploit you, and the vultures who want to make money off your insecurities by ignoring the "Time to get working on your beach body!" bullshit and instead committing yourself to something that is 100% proven to actually improve your health by protecting yourself from catching and spreading respiratory illnesses. 2026 is going to be hard enough. There are a lot of things that are out of our control, and a lot of us feel pretty helpless. This is one thing you can do to take control of your health and actually protect your community. Make 2026 a little easier for yourself and everyone around you. Wear a mask.

For those w/ social anxiety, calling this late at night means there's virtually no chance you have to worry about talking to an actual person. Take your time, write out what you want to say, call, read your script, and hang up.
If that's too much, all reps and senators have contact forms. Use them.

the beatles just had to make one of the heaviest doom riffs, huh
Agreed. It's infuriating.
This World AIDS Day we are grateful for the heroic folks at Takalani Sesame and @sesameworkersunion.bsky.social for helping children remember parents and siblings lost to AIDS.
This is the humanities at its best.
A reference I was not expecting in this thread. Nicely done.
Interior photo taken on December 1, 2024. On top of a dark wood floor is a pin style that was often called a button when tools to make such were commonplace in the late 80s as a craft. Under the clear protective plastic wrap of the pin's face is nothing but black paper. A single drop of hot glue on the front of the plastic holds a single thin red ribbon, folded so the loop is at the top, and the two ends are splayed out prominently though imperfectly since the ends fall a bit unevenly in place.
I was in high school when we made pins as you see below. This is mine that I've had since then.
A lot has changed over time about how the day is observed, but foremost to me is I strive to never forget why we needed this particular day of remembrance at all.

Photograph of a printed guidance memo stating that the U.S. Government will not be commemorating World AIDS Day this year. Key points include: USG funds should not be used for related events, personnel should refrain from public promotion via social media or other channels, and CDC and other USG staff may attend local events but cannot speak or promote attendance. The memo notes this guidance supersedes previous blanket approval and may require adjustments to planned activities.
1/ ⚠️ Breaking: At CDC, we've been told the US Government will not officially commemorate World AIDS Day this year. No explanation given.
Burn it ALL down
They are literally firing all the judges they think might grant relief. They just fired a friend of mine a couple hours ago. They have no shame. The bastards want an assembly line for deportations and nothing more; rubber-stamping bootlickers who’ll yes’sir at every new diktat to deny.
