He studied at there for 6 semesters. Shortly before his acceptance, in September, this photo was taken, showing the young artist in a suit, holding a palette and painting tools. Schiele is looking out of the photograph with big eyes, calmly, yet expectantly. After largely unsuccessful years at school, during which he had felt misunderstood, he was now finally able to focus on his artistic activities. His ambitions were dampened by the Academyโs conservative spirit, however, which is why he left the Academy prematurely after completing his triennium in 1909. A Calling Card and a Triangular Protractor survive from his time at the Academy.

Don Hong-Oai was born in Canton, China, and spent most of his life in Vietnam. At the age of 13, he began an apprenticeship at a photo and portrait shop. When he was not at the studio, he traveled and took photographs of the landscape. He stayed in Vietnam through the war, but fled by boat to California in 1979. He lived in San Franciscoโs Chinatown where he had a small darkroom to create his photographs. While living in the US, he returned to China every few years to make new negatives. Hong-Oaiโs style was heavily influenced by the legendary photographer Long Chin-Sanโs technique of layering negatives. By taking 3 negatives, foreground, middle ground, and far ground, and selecting a subject from each negative, Don would construct a serene landscape. Each uniquely handcrafted photograph is, in its entirety, a concoction of the artist's imagination. He assembled and printed the photographs by himself, never having an assistant or master printer aid him. Donโs work has won many international awards and has work has been collected worldwide.
