This morning at the park there was a TEENY TINY cry for help in the leaves!

This lil guy (probably? When he fell over I didn’t see a marsupium) needed an emergency extraction!

If you go to Arkansas, I definitely recommend bathhouse row. It’s really cool to see all the old architecture, and the hot spring baths that you can still get in the old Buckner bathhouse are cool. In the 80s they still had an attendant who would scrub you down, but it was kind of awkward.

It really is! When I left the metroplex on my trip to Oklahoma, it was like even though my car broke down. I was I had been in weeks. I’ve planned another one coming up.

Isopod of the Day, 5/5/25: Selenas

YES, her name is spelled with an extra S. Her mom was a really big fan of Tejano in the 90s and honestly, she thinks she’s lucky to have a meme for a name. It’s 5 de Mayo but she’s done explaining that it’s NOT Mexican Independence Day so she’s rolling back up.

I cannot believe Sunday went by and no one took Daddy Gus‘s advice. He yelled at me and said it was because I forgot to tag it again. In my defense, he’s not the only senior citizen in the room. #invertefest #bugsky

A wild roly-poly (A. vulgare) with a brown speckled Capace holding on pretty loosely to a stick as if he is a car in a police drama. He looks a little like he is hollering.

Isopod of the Day 5/4/25: Daddy Gus

Daddy Gus has seen it all and honestly he’s done with your tomfoolery. That cryptowhatsit and your monkey pictures are a load of hooey and you need to keep your money under your tergites like a normal crustacean.

Porcellio scaber “Dalmatian” - a whitish cream flattened isopod covered in black spots and sprinkles of various sizes - sitting on some crumbled up leaves and staring into your soul. He’s got that devious Porcellio look on his face and his antennae are spread wide.

Isopod of the day 5/3/25: Jimothy

Cursed with the face of an evil dictator but blessed with the heart of a preschool teacher, Jimothy splits his time between pre-masticating large leaves for struggling mancae and explaining that he’s not doing anything sinister, it’s just how he looks #Invertefest

Isopod of the Day, 5/1/25: Jamiroquai

Jamiroquai is a stylish guy who likes hanging out at the fancy organic buffet and politely tapping passersby with his antenna to give them his mixtape and ask if they have heard of his podcast, “Only Pod Can Judge Me.“ He refuses to pivot to video #InverteFest

Yesterday was a bit of a struggle so I forgot to tag this baby #invertefest and it is simply criminal for me to deprive the entire community of her little face

Whoa that was fast!!!!

A cute little Cubaris murina (possibly “papaya” but uncertain as came in a selection of C. murina “Mermaid Pearls.”) sitting in a blob of wet moss in front of a huddle of other C. murina that are probably smack talking her. Her adorable little face is pointed up at the camera and her antennae are stretched up and out like little arms reaching for you.

Isopod of the Day 4/30/25 (for real this time): Felicia

It’s Wednesday and Felicia… she… she just wants uppies, y’all. She doesn’t want to watch the news, forage for groceries, or even HEAR the word rent. Or mancae. Only uppies. Maybe, MAYBE fry food

A dark gray wild-caught isopod (Armadillidium vulgare) with dark brown/sandy speckles in rows down his carapace. Somehow he is sticking straight up out of a clump of damp sphagnum moss with his roly rumpus to the sky. I don’t know how to explain it, I just take the pictures.

Isopod of the Day, 4/30/25: Gustav

Gustav is a robust fellow who was unexpectedly relocated to his new luxury home. He now spends his time moss diving and hogging the fish flakes. Sadly, his sister Carmilla was unable to join him as she was eaten by a terrier two minutes earlier #InverteFest

Wild Armadillidium sp. isopod on a leaf stem, tapping his precious antennae on a person‘s gross calloused finger. He is very shiny and attractive.

I highly recommend P. pruinosus for a fancy first pod! They’re hardy, inexpensive, come in super cool morphs, and seem quite curious and friendly!

Oooo fancy enclosure!! Mine looks so DIY by comparison. Also, the rolys I got from outside seem incredibly stoked to be inside. They’ve been eating like crazy and come out of the leaf litter as soon as I open the lid!

So regal!

A mostly-white isopod (Porcellionides pruinosus “Oreo crumble”) with some black and gray speckles and a powdery quality to its carapace sits alertly on some catappa leaf litter watching a person clean and mist their humid zone. Soon there will be SNACKS. This isopod is often out watching things happen.

Isopod of the Day, 4/29/25: Emily

Emily is shy but fascinated with the intricacies of bin cleaning day so she watches from her porch. Plus she’s determined to be the first to get to the Repashy this time. #InverteFest

The shed front half of an isopod exoskeleton! It is a plain white colored perfect replica of the front half of a P. pruinosus isopod, including some legs the antennae and eye capsules. A rare find, as I usually find the backend, or they are eaten by the isopods and springtails.
