Really enjoyed talking to David Herbert about his latest piece for @esquiremag.bsky.social. Hope you do too.

And happy whatever you do or don't celebrate.

That would give them too much time to reflect on their own lives. Or, if not that, to put down their phones and go do...anything. I think this crazy rage stuff is just what they do to take a break from online shopping and online everything.

I haven't been Blue Skying it much but checked in and there's loads of interesting stuff going on here. Figured I should throw a link to my interview with Mary Roach into the mix. Oh and subscribe to @longlead.com's Depth Perception. You'll be glad you did. (It's free!)

Sept. 9 will be my 12 year anniversary of living in Alaska but...I won't be here for it. I'm moving back to the east coast. So excited. I will always love AK and will return time and again but I'm ready to live in New York again. (Pretty sure I'll listen to a lot of these podcasts along the way.)

To Vote in This Summer’s Primary, Pick Your Party Now You can only vote in NYC primaries if you’re registered with a party — and the deadline is coming up fast.

If you live in New York and want a say in who the Democratic nominee is, you have to change your party registration to Democrat by Thursday (online) or Friday (in person). It’s a closed primary. Independents and unaffiliated can’t vote in June!

10/ Already the replies are full of "fuck these papers." I would argue that's not the answer. Instead you should write or call the editor or ME and ask (not rant) that the paper how what Musk and Trump WILL AFFECT YOUR REGION. Don't yell. Ask. Write a letter to the editor doing same.

Most impressive are the vertically integrated health, social, commercial, and cultural services found within the stations; the construction of each cable tower was paired with public space amenities like playgrounds, outdoor gyms, art, promenades, and community centers with rooftop dance classes!

Colleagues happened to be en route to field work in Eel River when M7 #earthquake happened yesterday near Cape Mendocino, so they got a great opportunity to document some co-seismic landslides. Here’s a couple of nice pics they snapped on the beach before the tides take it away. 🧪⚒️

The Case for Being Ungrateful There’s a dark side to gratitude.

Research shows that gratitude has powerful mental- and physical-health benefits.

Yet it needs to be genuine to be effective. Forcing ourselves to be grateful is a form of toxic positivity.

Just in time for Thanksgiving, I took a look at the dark side of gratitude.

Laura Helmuth's impact on Scientific American & science journalism is immeasurable. She demonstrated how a major legacy publication could be a moral one: rigorous reporting on the climate crisis & untangling how science is political, such as explaining why trans kids deserve gender-affirming care
