Calling everything you disagree with “evil” or “illegal” is a precursor to calling those you disagree with “terrorists” or “criminals.”
Marginalized people seeking liberation and equality is NOT persecution of the majority.
Equality for Black folks is not persecution of white folks.
Equality for LGBTQ+ folks is not persecution of straight folks.
Equality for all faiths is not persecution of Christians.
My son on his 5th birthday

So to sum up, this passage could more accurately refers to “otherworldly correction for nations” and it does not, in any way, imply the existence of an eternal hell. That Christian Imperial idea is in direct contradiction to God’s love and justice as described elsewhere in the Bible. 5/5
3. The word for punishment here is kolasis, which is more accurately “correction.” The word implies a punishment meant to instruct as you would correct a child. Retributive punishment is a different word: timorea. 4/5
2. But, this still seems to indicate and eternal punishment. The word for eternal here is aionios, which in the first century, referred to a qualitative value of eternity. More accurately “otherworldly” or “cosmic.” If it was quantitative, the word would would be aidios. 3/5
1. Contextually the “these” here is referring back to verse 32 as “nations” (ethne), which is consistent with the prophetic tradition of addressing societal sin and punishment. In modern vernacular, he’s talking about systemic oppression. 2/5

I think there’s a lot of nuance there like you said, but if I had to put my finger on it, at its core is the idea of Christian supremacy backed by the doctrine of hell as eternal torment. This gives permission to ignore earthly suffering in favor of eternal glory.
