The main thing that put Hvammsvik above Sky Lagoon imo is Hvammsvik has multiple smaller hot pools at varying temperatures whereas Sky Lagoon only has 1 large one.
But the SL sauna has floor to ceiling windows and it's really soothing to sit in there and just stare out at the magnificent ocean.
Ah, that's fair. Iirc, the tour has a 2pm pickup (from central Reykjavik) option so you could take a bus from the hotel/airport to the city, and then take the tour - I don't think they provide pickup outside the city but I could be wrong - but that might still be too troublesome.
Sky Lagoon is nice, but I prefer Hvammsvik, which is about a 45min to 1H drive from Reykjavik.
I didn't drive when I was in Iceland 2 years ago so booked a day tour that included transport and entrance fee.
