The phrase β€˜I am somebody’ echoes the biblical idea that every person bears the image of God.

In a society that has often told certain communities they are β€˜nobody,’ Jackson’s message was rhythmic resistance and channeled the spirit of justice.

Now y’all (literally) see how racism has never been a dealbreaker in this country.

Whether for a pastor or a president.

Anyway, happy Black History Month to all who celebrate. ✊🏾

@jemartisby.bsky.social w/ his incisive historical insights & analysis. Everyone in America should be taught this! Let it sink in: We in the U.S. were complicit in the Holocaust before our military then fought against the Nazis. THIS is American history. jemartisby.substack.com/p/dont-start...

They know that losing political power would invite real scrutiny and accountability.

So the goal is simple: rig the conditions of the election, retain control, and consolidate power rather than face the consequences of their actions.

They are pulling Bovino from Minneapolis and replacing him with β€œborder czar” Tom Homanβ€”himself a less theatrical but no less cruel administrator.

They don’t care about people, they care about PR.

Ever notice how the inner voice that says, "We are powerless. This will never work." gets louder when you feel alone?

That's because loneliness and isolation amplify despair. Community, partnership, and action are the antidote.

Hope is a group project.

I suspect those pastors are either full-on MAGA or they are mostly silent right now for fear of being labeled too "political."

Either way, the damage has been and is being done.

The refusal to learn from that history and the people who lived it is one reason for the rise of authoritarianism in the U.S. today.

If you want specific examples of Black people resisting authoritarianism, here’s a good place to start.

White Americans keep looking to 1930s Germany for lessons on authoritarianism, but they ignore Black Americans who have survived it here.

Slavery, Jim Crow, and racialized state violence are forms of American authoritarianism.
