On May 2nd, in Western NY, federal immigration agents stopped a bus of farm workers from Lynn-Ette & Sons Farms. They had a list of names, including UFW worker leaders who have been organizing to unionize their workplace. Those workers were detained. 1/

There’s just so much shady shit in this story, but this really sticks out. Folks in NLRB’s IT unit were so freaked out by what they saw DOGE doing that they wanted to notify the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Then this happened:

How do you have an entire Wharton degree and not know tariffs are bad? How do you spend an entire career in real estate development, an industry notoriously susceptible to commodity price fluctuations, and not know tariffs are bad? The creation of economic strife is intentional.

Becca and Alvaro are two of the smartest, most dedicated public servants I know. This is illegal, a travesty, and a serious harm to our polity.

I can’t help but feel that even those of us who expected the worst (so, our current timeline) have been devastatingly caught on our heels, except for like 4 people. 🫠

Let me ask you to remember a second word: "No." All lawyers want to tell their clients yes. What is much harder is to tell your client no. We all recently learned about two groups of lawyers in the Justice Department. Both groups included Yale Law School graduates. One group was asked by the White House to approve an illegal program, at the hospital bed of the ailing Attorney General. Their answer, and the Attorney General's, was simply "No." A few years earlier, another group of Justice Department lawyers - again including graduates of this school--were asked to write an opinion asking whether American officials could lawfully torture detainees. Instead of saying no, they answered, "here's how." That was the wrong answer. Their job was to say no, what you are asking violates the law, and we should not do it. It is illegal, and it is wrong.
I often think of this excerpt from Harold Koh’s speech to our YLS graduating class:

I know there is a lot going on, but we haven’t had a really good Pride and Prejudice film adaptation in a while and I think we could all really use one. 🥹

An army of community volunteers springs into action as LA fires rage
"It's wild. There's people out here that have just created a chain," said one woman who showed up to volunteer at a YMCA in Los Angeles' Koreatown neighborhood.
The response from LA’s network of community organizations has been a sight to behold. In these wild times, I hope we take a moment to learn from them because (sadly) our communities will need these skills sooner or later. My heart is with you LA!
