Let Me Introduce You to The Blues
You say that you've been trying
Trying to get through
This world and all its troubles
You know that's up to you
You say that you've been stuck inside
Trying to break free
Get you to the world outside
That's not up to me
Maybe you've been hoping
For a better day for you
You think that you've got trouble
Let me, come on let me, just let me
Introduce you to the blues
Well times are getting crazy
And things have been going wrong
You think that it's the city
You've been running from
There ain't no greener pasture
Across the Hudson line
There ain't no new tomorrow
You're running out of time
I know cause I've been there
Sanding in your shoes
I got something baby
Let me, come on let me, just let me
Introduce you to the blues.
I wrote this thinking about how easy it is to feel stuck while chasing a better day. I’ve stood in those shoes too. The blues aren’t just sadness, sometimes they’re where we learn to listen to our own heart.

Image of a young man dejectedly looking at a calendar with the days of the week presented.
This poem started out as a poem but it was very bluesy and clearly needed to become a song. A poem about a bad Monday just getting worse as the week goes on.

An beautiful image of two people, a man and a woman bathing in it's orange and yellow glow.
A reflective poem about persistence, frustration, and forward motion. I explore the tension between dreams and reality, the refusal to surrender creativity, and the quiet determination to keep moving toward a destination that may never fully be reached. #poems #writer www.poemsandothersongs.com

Watching the World Go By
An iconic image of a man and a woman driving down the Pacific Coast Highway in California, The car is a baby blue convertible with a blue ocean and boat on the water in the background.
A friend challenged me to write some lyrics to a solo sax piece. I added some subtle bass and piano parts and this is what came of that. Listen on Spotify for incites into the poems origin. Visit www.poemsandothersongs.com for spotify & music links. #poetry #writing

A beautiful warm looking log cabin in a snowy clearing in the woods. Children out front build a snowman and Santa's sleigh flies over head.
When Christmas arrives, I think the world feels softer and friendlier. Smiles come easier, laughter lingers. This poem & song are for that brief magic, and the wish that the warmth & wonder of Christmas could last every day.

An image of a couple sitting together on a couch, watching iconic movie star Valentino on an old 50s style TV.
Valentino is a soft, cinematic poem about love lived in the glow of late-night movies. It’s a tender reminder that real devotion isn’t heroic or dramatic, it’s simply being there when the silver-screen magic fades #poetry #originalmusic

An image of a barren tree with the last orange leaf falling from it's branches. The tree is perched on a snow hill side as if awaiting the onslaught of winter.
Fall
The end of September claws at the leaves
Snow in the mountains hangs on the breeze
The sun still smiles but with a turn in the mouth
While the moon sways harvest and the flocks head south
Woolen caps don the heads of the children outside
While down filled blankets find bed ends to ride
The frost comes sneaking and fades with the day
But still finds haven beneath the last hewn hay
The neighbour’s hello can be seen in the air
As breath cringes and freezes and then disappears
Pastel coloured foliage is desperately clinging
Before losing their grip to go dancing and winging
Soon is the time the world turns away
A time when the night gets the better of day
Keeping the oath of its own revolution
‘Til the longing of days brings a new constitution
Sometimes I love the fall, the colours, the scent of damp grass and pine. But other days it leaves me chilled and a little uncertain, feeling the frost in the air and the quiet reminder that time keeps moving.

Image of a man dressed in hiking cloths, standing on the edge of a cliff overlooking a lush green mountain valley
This poem is about life and the idea that it's sometimes like being swept up by something larger than yourself, forced to climb “treacherous mountains” and tumble down “rolling hills.
Resistance doesn’t stop the motion, you just have to ride it out.

“Old Love” is a poem I wrote about a yearning for something genuine, enduring, and rooted in the heart.
Simple yet deeply felt, a reminder that true love doesn’t fade,it deepens with time.

An image of the poem The End of Summer on a golden background with fall leaves in red, orange and yellow surrounding the words.
The end of summer
Claws at the leaves
Snow in the mountains
Hangs on the breeze
The sun still shines
But with a turn in its mouth
While the moon sways harvest
And the flocks fly south
There’s something special about early fall, the crisp mornings, the scent of damp leaves gathering on the grass, and the shorter days that hint at the quiet months of semi-hibernation ahead. I guess it’s time to rummage through the mudroom closet for my running gloves… well, maybe not just yet!

Image of a middle aged man contemplatively looking down a winding country road with trees and farmers fields on either side. The scene has the essence of fall with yellow fields and browning leaves under a blue sky spattered with puffy white clouds.
I’ve carried this sense always, that life continues when breath ends. No proof, no cause, just a whisper in my mind. Perhaps I’m the kind of dreamer who trusts something waits just over the hill or around the bend. This poem is about that idea. #poems #poetry #WritingCommunity

The Poem, I See Your Face
I see your face
Eyes so true
The wrinkles there
Define you
When you look out
From in there
Is it really fair
I wonder should I ask you
And I see your face
And I see your race
We’re all in the same place
Oh, I see your skin
And the beauty within
Let it out, don’t keep it in
I have wondered at times
Why the colour of mine
Can frighten or
Even confuse you
We really have nowhere else to go
Got to bring us all together and so
I see your face
In the light of the sun
As hundreds of millions
Face the same one
So how common is that
That under that hat
You are more like me
Than you care to be
Oh, I see your face
And I see your race
We’re all in the same place
Us, us, us, the human race

An image of a lone figure in a winter jacket, back turned to the screen, staring at a cold, inhospitable, gray and white landscape
So my poems rhyme, most of the time, and that's because a lot of my poems become songs. However, this one did not but, it's still one of my favourites. On a cold Ontario morning, I was staring out a window at a typical December gale, and this is what I thought.

Broken Bones
How many times have you broken bones
When a friend turned their back
And left you alone
How many times has your heart been broke
Over death, over love,
Over some cruel joke
How many times has your will been crushed,
After years of building trust and faith
Just turned to dust
And how many times have you been flat broke
Not a buck, not a dime,
Just brutal hope
Yet here you stand, undaunted,
No matter what’s unfurled
Arrow-straight and focused,
Broken bones, but never kneeled.
Yup, it's been a while. I had to take some time off for cataract surgery. Now that I can see my hands in front of my face again, I'm working on some spoken word and other cool things that I should have ready in a few weeks. For now, hope this resonates. #poetry #poems #poetrycommunity #poetrylovers

Feel like belting out a Christmas carol with a karaoke back track? It's festive, fun, & perfectly fine - no judgment here! Even Bing needed a band. Stay tuned, though. I’ll be sharing an original carol before Christmas. Singing this one for fun.

CALGARY FLAMES - RED HOT - THE STORY
YouTube video by Calgary Falames Red Hot - The Real Story & More
I’ll be sharing some of my favourite poems and songs here, along with tracks, videos, and links. One standout project was a piece of NHL history I had the pleasure to write, sing, and produce for the Calgary Flames during their thrilling 1988/99 Stanley Cup run.
