To writers, boneyards are lithic libraries. We borrow from them the names of the dead to clothe our characters. We read their stones and find whole stories to tell in their economy of words. We gather the whispers of the dead to give our tales life. – #DAKilroy, 1982 #Writing

How to be a Writer.
1. Stare out of window at rain.
2. Experience a certain lassitude.
3. Contemplate the infinite.
4. Tea.

A black and white illustration of a basilisk, holding a human skull and wearing a regal mantle, with a black evil crown floating over its head. It's sitting on a throne made of stone with vines and plants creeping over it and a petrified human head at the top. The basilisk's eyes glow orange and its gaze is malicious
An illustration of mother Goethel, the witch from Rapunzel. She stands in the center, surrounded by thorny bushes and between two crooked trees, holding a baby wrapped in luminous white cloth and her eyes glowing a malicious golden color. In the foreground we see rampions growing from golden vines which intertwine like braids; in the background, in the distance and in the middle of a forest, we see a lone tower
a mock cover of the Prophet's Paradise, a collection of poems by Robert W. Chambers using the illustration Sleeper.
"Sleeper" is an Illustration of a chimera-like being; her head and torso are that of a human with long flowing hair whilst the rest of her body is that of a grouse or pheasant, covered in fur and wings wide open; the tail is snake-like.
She stands in darkness, a faint golden halo around her head and torso
toe-thrasher, a rat lord wearing a royal mantle made of white fur, thrashing in the middle of a swamp in its hind legs and holding a black flail. in the swamp, there are numerous yellow eyes

A ghostly white head with long hair and a circlet is trapped in a glass jar with a metal, spiky lid tied with chains. The head is screaming with its mouth open wide, while a purple ooze flows from it. The jar is on top of an altar of sorts with runic inscriptions on the steps leading to it. Behind it, a huge, dark creature with long extremities looms over the scene, with its hands surrounding the jar.
A lone, blond-haired figure on their knees grabs their head as they witness the destruction of an imposing city in the background. All around, corpses and ruin cover the landscape, and fire consumes the remains of the city, while the silhouette of a massive demon looms over the tallest building with its arms wide open. Around it, smaller winged demos fly about against a dark sky.
The focus of the illustration is massive cocoon-like formation made of gnarled branching shapes with a warm, eye-shaped light in the centre. In the foreground, a thick “branch” where a character is standing goes towards the background. The atmosphere is mostly blue and hazy, with some warm light particles floating around.
A horned and almost entirely covered creature stands in the middle of the picture. Frayed layers flow around its body, kind of disintegrating as they move. A dark face with bright eyes is barely visible. Behind it, we see a stony and almost organic setting in mostly cool colours. In the bottom of the frame, we see a small character looking at the giant creature, standing on an organic-looking pathway.
So' ʇopɐʎ,s ɯʎ qᴉɹʇɥpɐʎ¡ Might I be halfway through life already? Had a lovely day today, and things are looking better even as the days get gloomier.
Wouldn't complain if you lovely folks shared my work around today🌱

A section of one of my giclee prints, frame label and one of my business cards about to be packed in black tissue paper. The print is of a large Victorian house (Eel Marsh House from The Woman in Black) in a marshy landscape. A lonely figure stands in front of the house on a cart track.
Suitably gloomy & overcast weather for packing & shipping my gloomy & overcast prints. You too can hang this on that part of your staircase that creaks or that spare loo that nobody likes visiting. £75 (P&P free UK only - but I also ship worldwide) Check them out at nicktankard.co.uk Thank you

One of my favourite TV adaptations. I adore the book, but feel the TV series leaves out all the right bits to make it a good watch, whilst keeping the spirit of the book. Something rarely achieved!

An illustration inspired by the Brocken Spectre phenomenon - a figure full of light in the foreground is projected into shadow on the horizon. Or something.
A black and white illustration inspired by the Jonathan Miller adaptation of the M R James story Oh Whistle and I'll Come to you, My Lad. A dark figure in the distance pursues a man pictured in silhouette against a sun setting over the sea
A black and white illustration of the Robert Eggars film Nosferatu. The figure of a woman in early Victorian high mourning walks through a snowy graveyard, flanked by two metal cross shaped grave markers
An ink drawing of the side view of a crow cawing
Hello! It's no doubt partly due to my spectacularly poor marketing skillz, but sales of prints have been pretty woeful of late. So if you are after a gloomy antidote to all this pesky fine weather and sunshine etc, do have a gander. Reposts also much appreciated. sarahcoomershop.etsy.com
