Although Ghent is her scientific home β€” where she also completed a postdoctoral fellowship β€” Katleen recently spent two years at the University of Innsbruck in Austria. Now, she’s packing her bags again, this time for a new research adventure in New Zealand!

She loves exploring new landscapes, cultures, & cuisines, always trying to find time to mix fieldwork & conferences with other endeavors. When she’s not working, travelling, hiking, biking or cooking (and eating!), she’s probably dancing or β€œsinging” along to anything from Taylor Swift to Coldplay.

Today, she unravels the secrets of prehistoric earthquakes using their geological traces to understand what future ones might bring. Her study material? Sedimentary records from lakes and fjords along active subduction zones in Chile, Indonesia, and Alaska, which has taken her around the globe.

From childhood holidays in the mountains and volcano-themed computer games to studying real earthquakes β€” Katleen has always had a spark for Earth sciences. She earned her Master’s and PhD in Geology at Ghent University (Belgium), where she discovered her true passion: seismological research.

This is because they entail long records and provide access to data and sediments even after the original projects have been finalized. Apart from the most important outcomes of each ICDP project, this provides a crucial database for future studies that may address entirely new research questions.

To achieve this, he investigates loess-palaeosol-sequences and lacustrine sediments in Eurasia - for the latter archive-type also sediments in tropical W-Africa covering the last million years. Mathias is also fascinated by ICDP projects in general!

As geomorphologist with a strong palaeoclimatic, sedimentological & geochemical background, his main research interest centres on the reconstruction of local to regional climatic conditions during the Quaternary and the response of the terrestrial system including the living environment of humans.

Lisa loves to travel the world and socialize, sometimes more with animals than humans though. Luckily she can combine travelling with hiking (preferably volcanoes) and water sports. Other hobbies include rock climbing and drawing. Her favorite food is pasta, which she eats multiple times per week.
