New in Crime, Media, Culture: in-depth interviews with co-victims reveal how true-crime fandom + algorithms can retraumatize families (rumors, doxxing, speculation). More rigor, less spectacle.

Importantly, though, the benefits of true crime were often discussed alongside important caveats, like the need for the content to be factual, created ethically, and with co-victim consent. #TrueCrime

Three main themes were present in co-victims' interviews. 1. True crime can help bring needed attention to their loved one’s (and other people’s) cases. 2. True crime can help educate people on criminal justice system issues. 3. True crime can place pressure on criminal justice officials.
NEW RESEARCH 🔔🔔🔔: What are the benefits of true crime media attention, according to co-victims? Dr. Kelli Boling and I interviewed 20 loved ones of harmed and/or missing people to find out.
Thank you!! We had a small party with friends and family to celebrate. It was so much fun.
Thank you!!
Thank you!!!
I haven’t been as active here as I’d like, but I wanted to share that I received tenure and promotion to Associate Professor of Criminal Justice! I am so excited for this next chapter.
Something I’m being intentional about is enjoying my breaks. I did work this winter break (two R&Rs and a new paper completed/submitted), but I also traveled to Hawaii! Here are two of my fave pics!
I agree completely. I feel so much hope in the classroom
Welcome to winter break! Or, as I call it, welcome to the “make all the appointments and phone calls you’ve been neglecting the last 3 months” time! 😂😂
I have been in a major reading slump. What was your favorite book you read this year?
R&R submitted! 🎊🎊🎊
I think Shrinking (Apple TV) is my favorite show on TV right now.
This a very sad story. I was interviewed by The Guardian about missing woman Hannah Kobayashi and the theories surrounding her case.

I am so excited to have reached 500 citations!
I am thankful to get to do this work and focus my efforts on media and crime, domestic violence, and women’s issues in the criminal justice system. I am also thankful for my fabulous co-authors/colleagues.
We are excited to invite proposals for a Special Issue on the theme "Media and Politics in the Age of New Technologies" for The International Journal of Press/Politics.

I truly think we have one of the most beautiful campuses in the country! ♥️
How lucky am I that I get to work in a place so beautiful #SacState
This article has been haunting me since I read it. I feel so awful for this family.
I also worry about how AI is going to impact the true crime space.

If you were going to take a romantic trip to Europe, where would you go? (Preferably a three city itinerary)
Nick and I are discussing our 10 year anniversary next summer and are hoping for ideas!
We are reading “In Cold Blood” in my media and crime class and “Leaving Dorian” for my domestic violence class.
It varies by class, but generally I have them read the book in parts and then we meet for “book club” meetings throughout the semester where I lead discussion. The discussion questions tie the book to the course material.
I am happy to share my discussion questions if that would help!
What are the things going well for your classes this semester?
For me, my course book clubs seem to be going very well! I love hearing students’ insights about the material and how they apply the books to course concepts.
It was an incredible ASC conference in San Francisco! It was so great to see so many friends and colleagues! I presented in 4 different conference events (roundtables, paper presentations, workshops) across the four days!
I’m exhausted but thankful.

Does anyone know an expert on sentiment analysis using Python? Thanks in advance for the help!
Huge news in California. The Ebony Alert legislation has been signed. This represents progress toward finding missing Black children and women, who go missing at high rates. Happy to see this news today.
Today my research brief on the media portrayal of the death of US Army soldier Vanessa Guillén was published by the Crime Victims’ Institute at Sam Houston State. As always, my thoughts are with Vanessa and her family.
