In other words, this isn't a matter of programming or prompting or controlling the many-headed hydra of a chatbot. It's a matter of human beings doing what they will with a tool that can't suffer consequences. /4

All the chatbot companies keep trying to program their bots to be ethical. That seems like a fool's errand for a massive disembodied type-ahead tool that has millions of people asking it to do and say immoral things and finding creative ways around its restrictions. /3

And now the entities with the least accountability (billionaires & corporations) are using AI to reduce the final fraction of their accountability to zero.

The key difference between AI and human thought isn't the degree or type of intelligence. It's legal and moral accountability. A person does something wrong & in a just world consequences follow. AI does something wrong... crickets, even in a just world. /1

In my experience (a lifetime of VW's bc my dad was a loyal customer), it's a crap shoot. Either a monster than runs through anything, or a lemon with irresolvable electrical problems. I didn't want that crap shoot so it's been 20 years of Corollas for me. Current: 185k, only maintenance.

A bar graph from Pew Research comparing AI experts v. public on impressions of positive impact in the US in the next 20 years: Of US adults, 17% of the public thinks the impact will be positive, versus 56 percent of AI experts (people who were authors or presenters at an AI conference in the past 2 years).

This is what we mean by "AI is being forced on us." The "experts" may know more technically, but the public knows what they've experienced in the workplace: LLM-based GenAI Chatbots are ass except when they do what they're claimed to do and eliminate jobs.

There's always the potential for a move to Boston. We seemed to get everyone's excess this year. It's finally going away now.

I don't want to do a whole long rant on this, so I'll just say: the reason fossil fuels & other aligned incumbents don't want to transition to clean energy is that it will *damage their material interests*. And folks, they understand their own material interests. Really well!

One unanticipated benefit of AI is that scam emails are now error-free.

AI cameras are everywhere β€” and people are paying the price for their mistakes β€” Business Insider How a license plate camera misread unraveled one man's life. Updated Mar 9, 2026, 9:07 AM GMT In April 2024, Brandon Upchurch and his cousin were driving home from a convenience store when they notice...

We are living in the world the women researchers (Timnit Gebru, Joy Buolamwini, and others) featured in Coded Bias warned us about 6 years ago (years before any of the men in this field you usually hear about reached the same conclusions).

A close friend sat next to a few recent college grads from the UK planning to drive in the US: Boston-->NY-->DC-->TN-->New Orleans. And back. They had 8 days. She gave them the hard truths. (AND reco'd some spots in Nashville & New Orleans they wouldn't have found)

20 miles in an hour!?! 7 1/2 miles in the Boston metro can take 40-45 minutes. Not in rush hour.

At some point we should realize that evangelical anti-semitic Zionism is a real thing.

Need to get all the Jews to Israel to trigger the return of Jesus. They support Israel not because they like Jews, but because they need Jews to die in order to launch Armageddon and fulfill Revelations.

At ~$1 billion/day, the US has spent as much on the war in Iran in ten days as the entire FY25 budget for the National Science Foundation ($10 billion).

Trump's FY26 budget request for the agency declined to $3.9 billion, due to a "realignment of resources in a constrained fiscal environment."

If gender were the immutable biological reality they claim to believe it is, they wouldn't need to spend so much energy policing it like this.

A sleek steel toilet paper dispenser is mounted at commode height on the wall of a bathroom stall. Shreds of toilet paper on the floor signal the difficulty of dispensing it.

What super-genius should I thank* for installing a toilet paper dispenser lower than my knees so I have to do toilet yoga to dispense tp?
